We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Grier “missg” Spry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Grier “MissG”, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My journey to finding my purpose wasn’t linear—it was a mix of exploration, challenges, and a deep desire to create meaningful experiences. I’ve always been drawn to storytelling, creativity, and problem-solving, but it wasn’t until I combined these passions with my love for travel and community impact that everything clicked.
Over the years, I’ve developed the habit of listening—really listening—to people’s needs and desires. Whether it’s a brand struggling to tell its story, a community needing resources, or an entrepreneur with a vision, I’ve learned that the best designs and strategies come from understanding human experiences. That’s what drives me every day.
My purpose is to help others find their voice, tell their stories, and create experiences that leave a lasting impact. Whether through branding, travel experiences, or creative storytelling, I believe that design has the power to move people and inspire change.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Grier Spry, a brand strategist and multidisciplinary designer passionate about creating immersive, purpose-driven branded experiences. My work spans branding, large-format print design, experiential marketing, and real estate marketing. At the core of everything I do is the belief that design and storytelling, when backed by the right strategy, have the power to inspire, connect, and create lasting impact.
One of the most exciting aspects of my work is the ability to merge strategy with creativity—whether it’s building a brand that aligns with an entrepreneur’s vision, designing an experience that brings people together, or using storytelling to amplify a cause. I don’t just design visuals; I craft narratives that resonate and drive action.
Augmented Reality (AR) is my latest expansion. I started by designing AR filters for Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and now I’m incorporating AR into art, events, branding, and more. This technology allows for deeper engagement and storytelling, transforming the way brands and individuals connect with their audiences.
For me, it’s all about blending creativity with purpose. I want people to feel something when they interact with my work—whether it’s through branding, an event experience, or even a product that makes them think.
I’m always open to collaborations and new opportunities, so if you’re looking to build something meaningful, let’s connect!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say three things really shaped my journey: strategic thinking, adaptability, and storytelling.
Strategic thinking has been a game-changer for me. I’ve always believed that design is more than just making things look good—it’s about solving problems, creating connections, and making an impact. When I approach branding or experiential marketing, I’m always thinking beyond aesthetics. What’s the purpose? Who’s the audience? How does this translate into something meaningful? That mindset has allowed me to build brands and experiences that truly resonate. If you’re just starting out, I’d say take the time to understand the “why” behind what you do. Study brand strategy, look at campaigns that have been successful, and ask yourself what made them work.
Adaptability has also been huge for me. The creative industry is constantly evolving, and if you’re not open to learning and pivoting, you’ll get left behind. When I first started, I was focused on traditional design, but as technology changed, so did my work. That’s how I got into augmented reality—I started with filters for Meta’s platforms, and now I’m incorporating AR into branding, art, events, and more. Being willing to evolve and embrace new skills has kept me ahead of the curve. My advice? Stay curious. Try new things. Take a class, experiment with a new tool, or put yourself in situations that challenge you. Growth happens outside of your comfort zone.
And then there’s storytelling. That’s really at the heart of everything I do. Whether it’s branding, an immersive event, or even a product launch, people don’t just connect with visuals—they connect with emotions and narratives. I’ve always been drawn to the way storytelling can move people, change perceptions, and create lasting impact. If you want to build something meaningful, you have to learn how to communicate a story that resonates. Watch great commercials, study film, look at the way brands craft their messages—it’s all storytelling.
For anyone early in their journey, I’d say focus on learning, stay adaptable, and think about the deeper impact of your work. Find mentors, ask for feedback, and don’t be afraid to take risks. The biggest growth moments come when you step into something new and trust yourself to figure it out.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instilling confidence in me. They never put boundaries on my dreams or limited what I believed was possible. Instead, they encouraged my wildest ideas, supported my most ambitious goals, and always gave me the space to explore, learn, and grow into who I was meant to be.
Because of that, I moved through life fearlessly. I never second-guessed whether I was capable because they made sure I knew I was. Even when I failed—because failure is inevitable—I never felt stuck or discouraged for long. I always had them in my corner, reminding me that failure wasn’t the end, just part of the process. That kind of support is powerful because it allows you to take risks, to dream bigger, and to chase what excites you without being weighed down by fear.
Their unwavering belief in me shaped the way I approach everything, from my career to my personal growth. It taught me that confidence isn’t about knowing everything or being perfect—it’s about trusting yourself enough to figure things out along the way. And that’s something I carry with me in everything I do.
