We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ground Floor Murals a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ground Floor Murals, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Running your own business is a ton of hard work. Valuing work ethic has been the key to our business’s growth. We know that without our own hard work, we will not have the ability to do what we love for our career. Another motivation behind our mindset is our families, who immigrated to the United States from the Philippines and Mexico, in hopes that we will have more opportunities to reach professional heights we might not have had the chance to back home. To make them proud, to express our gratitude for their strenuous efforts towards our futures, and to continue to have the ability to do what we love, we do our best to work hard.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are local artists born and raised in San Diego. We paint murals depicting animals, nature, and popular figures in history. Our goal is to help add representation to our city for those who may not feel properly or sufficiently represented in media. We feel that it’s important for everybody to be able to feel a sense of pride in where they come from and who they are. By putting up fine art across our city, we are attempting to beautify the walls our neighbors walk past every day, with the intention to promote more love and care for our wonderful city’s diverse communities. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three skills we learned that impacted us the most along our journey are our ability to market our product, our ability to find work, and of course, our painting skills. We are both self-taught artists, and in order to get where we are today with our artwork, we practice endlessly. We have both been drawing since childhood, but we don’t believe it necessary to have been doing art your entire life in order to be good at it. We think anyone can improve and expand on their artistic capabilities with enough time and dedication to their craft. Like with anything, practice will get you where you want to be!
Since our product is our artwork, we work diligently to ensure our murals are the best that they can be. The better our artwork is, the easier it is to sell what we have to offer. Staying present in our community not only fulfills our desire to show love to the city that raised us, but it also keeps us on potential clients’ radar. Staying active and always seeking out ways to get involved and give back is how we market ourselves most effectively and in turn, find more creative work.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Since animals and nature are our biggest shared passion, it has been a huge goal of ours to paint more animals. Our dream is to one day paint in collaboration with the San Diego zoo, Seaworld, and the Living Coast Discovery Center. We admire their conservation efforts and what they are doing to promote appreciation for wildlife and different species of animals. Any opportunity we get to take on a project in which animals are depicted, we are ecstatic about.
