Meet Gulshan Channa

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gulshan Channa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Gulshan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
When my daughter was born back in 2012, she developed jaundice within 3 days of birth. It made me wonder how a brand newborn baby can get sick and have issues with the liver. Thankfully, she recovered within a few weeks. However, this incident made me curious and led me on a path to learn more about food and the environment. I was amazed when I found out we were surrounded by processed food that was contaminated with toxins and pesticides. Slowly, I started buying more organic foods and weaned out packaged food which at the time I thought was healthy. It has been 11 years and I never looked back. My family gets sick less often and recover faster whenever we do.

After learning about the chemical contamination of food, I felt sad seeing others eat that toxic food. I saw people suffer from health problems that can easily be preventable by a few lifestyle changes. I wanted to help them and tell them what’s right and what’s not. I wanted to teach classes on how to cook wholesome food at home, which is healthy as well as delicious. I knew the benefits because I have been fortunate enough to have my mom’s home-cooked meals growing up.

Living this lifestyle gave me the confidence to take the step towards the biggest passion of my
life which is to help others through holistic health and wellness. I’m blessed and privileged to support and teach my clients about nutrition and well-being. Through self trial and self-discovery, I found my purpose which is to make connections and support others in their health journey so they can live the best life possible.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. I’m passionate about staying healthy in body, mind, and spirit and guiding others with the same. I help my clients change with lifestyle changes by building small daily habits with four pillars of health and wellness. I guide and support them to sleep better, eat whole foods, add daily intentional movement, and take care of mental health. Working on these pillars helps them improve their gut health and achieve a healthy weight so they can avoid or improve all chronic problems that can creep up as we age.

I am also a certified Chopra life coach which is based on Vedic principles. I use these teachings while working with my clients to discover their purpose, find areas for potential growth, change limiting beliefs, and set intentions for change using several tools like meditation, journaling, somatic work, self-compassion, etc.

With the knowledge of modern and ancient wisdom, my clients and I progressively create a toolbox together that helps them live to their greatest potential. Therefore, they begin to show up as their best self and create a life of their dreams. I love working with clients who are ready to bring the change in their lives by doing the necessary work. I provide a safe space where my clients can heal and grow while exploring and developing the deeper parts of themselves through infinite possibilities, accountability, and compassion.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities or skills that impacted my journey are my passion for helping people, always a student by keeping a beginner’s mindset, and my optimism and self-compassion.

If someone is starting their journey, I would advise them to have a clear understanding of their goals and why they want to achieve them. Writing them down is very helpful. Being reminded of what’s important to us oftentimes gets us right back on track if we experience any challenges. Once you get clear on your goals, making a path to achieving them gets easier. Focus on one habit at a time. Make your goal so small that you can do it even on a busy and difficult day. Get out of all or none mentality. I always say it is ok to fall down as long as you get up again and start again towards working on your dreams even if that happens every day.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Anytime I feel overwhelmed, I turn to my breathing and meditation to stay in the present moment. Most of the time when we worry and feel overwhelmed we think about the past or future. By bringing our awareness to the present moment we avoid regret and future stories that go in the mind. Another great tip is journaling by writing our feelings and talking with a trusted friend. Slowing down and looking at the bigger picture helps me stay calm and grounded.
