We were lucky to catch up with Gustavo Gutierrez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Gustavo with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
As an immigrant who came to the United States at just four years old from Zacatecas, Mexico, my early experiences were profoundly shaped by my father’s relentless work ethic and dedication. He worked tirelessly in agriculture and construction jobs, taking on grueling responsibilities to provide for our family of five children and my mother. His unwavering commitment to ensuring we had what we needed, despite the long hours and physically demanding labor, left a lasting impression on me. Watching my father work so hard to support us instilled in me the belief that hard work is not just a necessity but a duty — one that reflects love, sacrifice, and responsibility.
From a young age, I began working alongside him whenever I could or at least doing very similar jobs, learning firsthand the importance of perseverance and teamwork. These early lessons taught me that success isn’t handed to you; it’s earned through consistent effort, dedication, and a willingness to support others in the pursuit of common goals.
My father’s example showed me that work is more than just a means of survival; it’s a way to contribute to the well-being of those you care about and to build a future with integrity and pride. This foundation has guided me throughout my entire life, shaping my approach to challenges and driving me to honor the legacy of hard work and determination that my father modeled so powerfully.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a a first-generation immigrant to the United States and a dedicated communications professional with nearly 20 years of experience across non-profit and corporate sectors. In my most recent Communications roles I’ve served a myriad of communities in ways they can better take advantage of the resources that are available to them. I’ve played a pivotal role in numerous organizations fundraising efforts, capital campaigns, crowdfunding and event management that have led efforts in enhancing an organization’s morale, retention and engagement.
Driven by a deep passion for connecting people to the resources and services they need, I have made it my mission to improve the quality of life within my community. In my previous roles, through co-led outreach programs I’ve served over 100,000 individuals annually and now get to serve over 1 million residents in my current Communications role. Through strategic communications and digital campaigns, I have consistently worked to build professional relationships that benefit all members of communities and introduce innovative ways for people to lead fulfilling lives.
With a focus on fostering connections and driving positive change I continue to leverage my skills and experiences to make a meaningful impact in every role I undertake.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my career, three words stand out as pillars of my professional journey are leveraging connections, integrity, and perseverance. Leveraging connections has been crucial in building relationships that create opportunities and drive meaningful change in my community. Integrity guides every decision I make, ensuring that my work is always grounded in honesty and ethical principles. Perseverance has fueled my ability to overcome challenges, pushing me to stay committed to my goals even when faced with obstacles. Together, these values have shaped my approach to both life and work, allowing me to contribute positively and effectively in all that I do.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me is bringing me to a country of boundless opportunities and once I arrived constantly reminding me that absolutely everything I set my mind to accomplish was attainable through hard work, dedication and discipline.
