We were lucky to catch up with Guy Balbaert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Guy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Initially, I recognised my purpose early on, but I struggled with confidence and often compared myself to others whom I saw as more talented, articulate, or educated. Over time, I realized that I was only competing with myself, and comparing myself to others was unproductive. Growing up in a family where music and words were always present, those passions felt natural to me. The real challenge was finding ways to combine these interests in a way that could serve me with my artistic projects and others in business to provide a sustainable livelihood.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I regularly release singles, which keeps me creatively engaged and connected with like-minded people. My latest single, ‘Gone Girl,’ features a subtle David Bowie-inspired edge, blending romantic longing with my poetic sensibility. Through evocative lyrics, electro vibes and vibrant melodies, it explores the tension between holding on and letting go, capturing themes of love, loss, and big dreams. I co-wrote and produced it with my longtime friend Joris Devos.
Beyond writing the music and lyrics, I handle all aspects of my releases—artwork, videos, promo copy, mailers, and social media engagement. While I don’t tour due to other commitments, this approach keeps me active as a songwriter. This year, I was fortunate to co-write ‘Love You Again’ with Jessica Lynn and Tom Lodewyckx. There’s also another ‘energy bomb’ track planned with her for 2026.
Additionally, I’m involved with ‘StringOvation,’ an online platform (www.stringovation.com) for music teachers and students in the U.S. that fosters community, provides teaching tools, and offers affordable access to top products to have the best musical experience possible. I serve on the board of directors, initially as a consultant, and am increasingly taking on a more active role.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Ultimately, success is about surrounding yourself with others who share your passion and resilience. It’s about building genuine connections with people who understand the journey, support your vision, and inspire you to keep going. Equally important is developing the resilience to hear ‘no’—understanding that a ‘no’ today can often be a ‘maybe’ tomorrow. Embracing rejection as part of the process helps you stay focused, adaptable, and motivated to continue pursuing your goals. It’s a marathon, not a race. But for people born with a minimal amount of patience. It can be challenging and I’m one of those 😉

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I would prioritize traveling with close friends and making sure to visit all the destinations still on my bucket list. Traveling has always been a source of inspiration and growth for me, and sharing those experiences with loved ones would make it even more meaningful. I believe I would also continue working, as it keeps me engaged, motivated, and ‘on my toes.’ Knowing that our time is limited in this life has made me more open and appreciative of the moments I share with loved ones, encouraging me to be more present and genuine in my relationships. Well… That’s the goal. I’m not sure I’m very effective every day with the last part.
