Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to H. M. Palmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
H. M. , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Once I learned in my twenties that everyone is making it up as they go, I largely stopped caring what other people think. Once you realize this, an unbelievably heavy burden releases and confidence blooms in its place.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In my day job, I’m a conflict resolution professional. But my true passion is writing and helping educate women on domestic abuse/coercive control as someone who experienced it while I was teaching a course on that very topic. I want women to know it can happen to anyone and that you’re not weak or unintelligent for ending up in that situation.
In my writing, I try to provoke deep thought and questioning in my readers. I don’t stay within the bounds of what’s popular and I’m not worried about straying into taboo topics. Currently, I’m working on a romcom/thriller crossover that explores a woman’s worth and how modern society has impacted femininity.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Determination, organization, and grace. Determination to keep going when the writer’s block hit. Organization to keep myself on a schedule. And grace to know when it was better to take a rest day than to push myself to the point of burn out.
Firstly, know that there is never complete balance in your journey. Check in with yourself often. And be honest with yourself on when it’s time to push, when it’s time to rest, and when it’s time to redirect.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Unplug. From social media, difficult people, and technology in general. I take it as a sign that I need to reduce my information intake and do a mental clean out. This may be a twenty minute walk or a long weekend, depending on how overwhelmed I am and what kind of unplug is feasible at that time in life.
