We were lucky to catch up with H.O.M.E. (Helping Out Made Easy) recently and have shared our conversation below.
H.O.M.E., we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Neither of us were really prepared to begin speaking publicly as you can tell from our early announcement videos. We persevered through this fear because we knew what we were doing was bigger than us and meant our pride and dignity had to be put aside. It wasn’t until we had completed our first outreach that we started feeling confident in ourselves because of the response we had received from those around us sending so much support and encouragement. We’ve gotten to a place where it’s becoming very easy for us to speak about what we do and plan to do with little to no practice beforehand

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Our group is a nonprofit that goes outside and makes a difference in the community by creating small ripples that will turn into large and impactful waves either directly through us or through someone we’ve impacted. We feed the homeless, clean up messes left by others, and help anywhere we can. We host our own events and collaborate with others that same this same passion at least once a month. I think the most exciting thing about our group is that we are led by the youth so it gets more youthful individuals involved since it creates a more laidback environment that isn’t intimidating.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the biggest skill is time management. Being divided between H.O.M.E., college, and work was s hurdle we knew would stick with us when we decided to step into this. Managing a healthy amount of time to achieve our goals in all these aspects is the best skill we’ve developed as it allows us to not be put under immense pressure to execute our plans for the community as well as giving us a grace period to fix anything that may go wrong while executing. Another skill that has helped us has definitely been networking with others. Neither of us were ever really extroverts so taking the time to build courage and reach out to people has helped us get our name out to the masses better and has helped us reset healthy relationships with everyone we have worked with. The final skill and likely the most underrated has to be asking for help, although this may not seem like a skill, often times as humans we refuse to seek help from others as we see that as a form of weakness when often times that is what makes us that much stronger. Getting someone else involved can open a multitude of opportunities and ideas that otherwise wouldn’t have existed and very well could’ve been the difference betweeen success and failure.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
H.O.M.E. has never been just 2 young men but it’s always been a collective of different people with their own individual skills that have helped us. In the beginning when we had no idea how to start getting content out our friend Jacob Topete played a big role by helping us and producing our first ever video, it set the standard for our work and let people know that we were taking this very serious. The man behind the logo our friend 4K Jesus, without him we wouldn’t have such a recognizable and welcoming logo that sets us apart from other groups and exemplifies our youth. Today we have our faithful camera woman Adara Fernandez who produces nearly all our videos with the upmost care and effort that always makes us grow bigger and bigger. Our shirt printer whom gives us an amazing rate so that we’re able to print our logos on shirts and sell them for a profit that goes right back into the community. Diana Flores is basically the 3rd founder of H.O.M.E. as she’s always by our side offering advice and assisting in planning and basically every aspect of what we do. If not for her the spark in us likely wouldn’t even exist.
