Hi Hadil, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Being the only one in the room who looks like me has been both a challenge and a source of strength. At 33, I’ve come to realize that life’s most profound lessons often emerge in our 30s. Growing up in the Palm Springs area, I was drawn to girly things—anything pink, cheetah print, lipstick, and the allure of looking like a Barbie doll. My journey into fitness in my early 20s taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, shaping my approach to life and business.

Moving to San Diego at 26 was transformative. The city’s vibrant and motivated residents inspired me, and I knew I wanted to be part of that energy. My job as a cardiac anesthesia tech at a pediatric hospital was fulfilling, offering structure and the chance to connect with incredible people. However, my passion for the beauty industry grew stronger, and I knew I needed to pursue it to find true happiness.

My father, a hardworking provider, instilled in me the values of dedication and perseverance. While I admired his work ethic, I also wanted a career that brought me joy and excitement—something I could look forward to every day. This desire led me to enroll in Esthetician school while working full-time. The journey was tough, especially when my father’s hospitalization coincided with my job search. This challenge, however, became the impetus for opening my own studio, a decision that required immense courage and determination.

Owning my studio has been a dream come true. It brings out a different side of me, one that thrives on creativity and connection. My faith in God, the support of my family, and a structured approach to life have been instrumental in my success. My studio is not just a business; it’s a safe, welcoming space where clients can feel their best and achieve their skin goals.

In a world where I often stand out, I’ve learned that effectiveness and success come from embracing who I am, staying true to my values, and continuously striving to improve myself and my business. By listening to my clients, being kind, and putting myself out there, I’ve built a thriving business that I am immensely proud of.

Being an esthetician is not just my profession; it’s my passion and calling. I love making people feel beautiful, and it’s a joy that goes beyond words. It’s a warm, fuzzy feeling that fills my heart every time I see the confidence and happiness on my clients’ faces. The hugs I receive after a service are the moments I live for—they are a testament to the impact I can make in someone’s life.

At my studio, I focus on creating a safe and welcoming environment where clients can feel their best and pursue their skin goals with confidence. I specialize in personalized skincare treatments, helping clients achieve healthy, glowing skin. Each service is tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients, whether it’s tackling acne, anti-aging treatments, or simply providing a relaxing facial.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on my journey, three qualities have been particularly impactful: resilience, empathy, and continuous learning.

Building a business from the ground up requires a strong sense of resilience. There were many obstacles along the way, from balancing full-time work and school to navigating the uncertainties of opening my own studio. Resilience helped me push through challenges and stay focused on my goals. My advice to those early in their journey is to stay determined and not be discouraged by setbacks. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger and more prepared for the future.

Being an esthetician is not just about providing skincare treatments; it’s about connecting with clients and understanding their needs. Empathy allows me to build trust and create a welcoming environment where clients feel heard and valued. For those starting out, I recommend practicing active listening and showing genuine care for others. Building strong relationships with clients is key to a successful and fulfilling career.

The beauty industry is constantly evolving, with new techniques, products, and trends emerging regularly. Continuous learning has been crucial in staying current and providing the best possible service to my clients. I advise newcomers to invest in their education and stay curious. Attend workshops, take courses, and seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support. Staying informed and adaptable will set you apart in any field.

For those early in their journey, my overall advice is to remain passionate and true to yourself. Pursue what brings you joy and fulfillment, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Surround yourself with supportive people, prioritize your well-being, and remember that success is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace every experience as a learning opportunity, and stay committed to your vision. The person who has been most instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and develop essential skills is my little sister, Christine!
