Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Haiden Bohm. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Haiden, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always loved cooking and baking—it’s been the thing that feels the most natural to me. After college, I was struggling to find a job, and honestly, it was discouraging. But in that space of uncertainty, I started leaning into the one thing that had always brought me joy: baking. Every birthday, I showed up with something homemade, decorated with love.
Pretty quickly, people started asking if I was selling them, and at first, I laughed it off. I never thought it could be more than a hobby. But the more I baked, the more I realized that this was what I was meant to be doing. What began as a way to show up for the people I care about slowly grew into something much bigger—Buttercream Boy.
It’s still surreal to me that what started in my own kitchen has turned into a business and a brand. I never expected this path, but looking back, every step makes sense. Not finding a “traditional” job actually gave me the push to follow my dreams, and in the process, I discovered my purpose.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I run Buttercream Boy, a cake studio I started out of my kitchen in Venice. What began with making cakes for friends has grown into a business that celebrates handmade, one-of-a-kind creations. Every cake I make is different—decorated with seasonal fruits, florals, and playful details—so no two are ever the same. I think that’s what makes it special: it feels personal, like a memory you get to eat.
For me, the most exciting part is how much people connect to it. Cakes are often at the center of big moments—birthdays, weddings, celebrations—and knowing my work gets to be part of those milestones is what inspires me every day.
Right now, I’m focused on continuing to grow Buttercream Boy as both a cake business and a creative brand. My menu changes seasonally which allows me to be creative and come up with new flavor combos depending on what’s in season at the time. I also do pop-ups in LA, which have been such a fun way to meet people face-to-face and bring the cakes into the community. I just did my second wedding and although it’s stressful because you only get one shot the reward is much greater and getting to be apart of someone’s most special day is what keeps me going.
The dream is to keep expanding— and eventually not just in cakes. At its heart though, Buttercream Boy will always be about creating something beautiful, nostalgic, and made with love here in Venice.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three things stand out as most impactful in my journey:
1. Creativity & adaptability – Baking is both an art and a science, and I’ve learned to embrace the creative side. Not every cake goes exactly to plan, but that’s often when the most beautiful, unexpected designs happen. My advice: don’t be afraid of mistakes—use them as part of your process.
2. Community & connection – Buttercream Boy really started because friends kept asking me for cakes. Word-of-mouth and genuine support built the foundation. My advice: lean on your community and don’t be shy about sharing what you’re working on—you never know who will be your biggest supporter.
3. Persistence & self-belief – Not finding a job after college was discouraging, but it pushed me to believe in myself and carve out my own path. My advice: if the traditional route doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Sometimes it means you’re meant to create your own lane.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’ve been lucky to collaborate with a few of my favorite brands in the past, and it’s always such a rewarding part of this work. Going forward, I’d love to focus more on larger projects with brands in Los Angeles—whether that’s for photo shoots, events, or creative promos. I think cakes can bring such a fun, nostalgic, and unexpected element to brand storytelling, and I love the challenge of dreaming up something unique that feels true to both Buttercream Boy and the brand I’m working with.
