We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haifa Baptiste a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Haifa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Completely by accident. I was always very attuned to concepts of fairness and justice. When I graduated from college, I had plans to work in the healthcare field, perhaps in management and eventually as a hospital administrator. It wasn’t until a volunteer position at a community health organization in Miami turned into an internship that I realized what I wanted to do. As an intern, I had the opportunity to help this organization secure an $80,000 grant to provide health services to the community. It was my first time working on a grant, and I felt so fulfilled knowing I had made a difference, that these resources would help people. I knew immediately that this is was my purpose. Since then, I’ve been helping nonprofit organizations secure the resources they need to fulfill their missions. I’ve worked in so many capacities, as a in-house fundraiser, on consultant teams, and now as a business owner of Sunshine Impact Solutions.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the Owner and Principal Consultant of Sunshine Impact Solutions LLC, a nonprofit management and fundraising consultant firm that specializes in helping small and midsize nonprofit organizations build capacity and secure funding to scale their impact. I started my business because, during my time working in social impact organizations, I recognized that many smaller organizations struggled to grow their revenue and increase their impact due to a lack of capacity. Many are short-staffed and overwhelmed. I’ve worked at these organizations. I’ve often been the one-person fundraising team that had to do it all with little help or support. I know how exhausting it can be, and how easily it can lead to burnout. I wanted to be a resource for organizations like that and for individuals doing the important work of caring for those who are most vulnerable in our community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence, hope, and hard work are three qualities that have been really critical in my journey. Starting a business is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. There are so many things I didn’t know, there are a lot of different aspects to consider, finances, clients, and knowing when to hire help. There’s still so much I don’t know. I had to be persistent when communicating the unique value I provide to potential clients, and I had to fight through my disappointments when I didn’t get opportunities I wanted and continue to push through, be consistent and continue doing the work. This has yielded incredible results for my business, and I want to encourage people who are starting out on their journey to keep pushing themselves and not let a few setbacks deter them from pursuing their goals. Doing the work (whatever that means for you) will always pay off, and continue to have faith in your ability to succeed.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are socail impact organizations that want to scale up their fundraising and their impact. I work primarily with small to mid-sized organizations that may not yet have the budget or capacity to hire someone full time for a fundraising role. My goal with any organization I work with is to help them get to a place where they are able to hire full-time professionals in-house and become financially sustainable. I enjoy working with organizations serving youth, women, and those who are often on the margins. That said, any opportunity to help organizations create lasting social change feels rewarding to me.
