We recently connected with Hakan Adik and have shared our conversation below.
Hakan , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by constantly observing the world around me. Nature, art, music, conversations-they all inspire me. I also try to step away from tattooing now and then to recharge, whether it’s visiting a gallery, walking in the city, or just watching a good film. That balance keeps my mind fresh.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a tattoo artist based in Brooklyn, originally from Istanbul. I’ve been tattooing for over 10 years, and my work focuses on colorful, micro-realistic designs often inspired by art history, nature, and personal symbolism. What excites me most is being able to turn emotions, memories, and stories into something permanent and meaningful on the skin.
My style blends fine detail with vibrant color, and I love creating custom pieces that feel both timeless and personal. I see each tattoo as a small collaboration a way to bring someone’s inner world to life through art.
Lately, I’ve been focused on growing my client base in New York and continuing to evolve my artistic voice. I share my latest work and open appointments through my website and Instagram, where people can also get a sense of my creative process.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I think the three qualities that helped me most were: patience, curiosity, and resilience.
Patience was key, especially in the beginning. Learning how to tattoo, building a client base, and developing a unique style all take time. There’s no shortcut and that’s okay.
Curiosity kept me growing. I never wanted to just “do the same thing better” I always wanted to explore new techniques, study different art forms, and push my creative boundaries.
And resilience maybe the most important one. There are moments of self-doubt, slow seasons, or setbacks. What kept me going was the belief that every challenge had something to teach me.
For anyone starting out: take your time, stay open to learning, and don’t be afraid to fail. Every mistake is part of the process. The more honest you are with your art and your growth, the more your work will truly reflect who you are.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me the importance of honesty. Not just being honest with others, but also with myself ; with my feelings, my goals, and my art.
