We were lucky to catch up with Haley Blevins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Haley, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Every side of my family is extremely hardworking, and it was almost unavoidable to not absorb their mantras and grit. My father was especially one of the most intelligent and hard working people I know. He was a black man working in a very white field back in the day, and it was through his hyper excellence and intelligence that earned him his career. Much of his work ethic came down to people not being able to question you or your work because it spoke for itself. Inevitably that is the sort of way of being that runs through my veins as well and has propelled me to many different fields and led me to many different experiences.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a video editor, as my father was. I learned by making videos throughout high school, often to music for class projects. Video editing is one of the few tasks that allows my brain to totally flow and sort of unplug from time. While I’m editing, everything within it makes sense, there is a structure and a puzzle to be solved. I’ve worked with clients such as Disney, Hulu, Netflix, musical artists, and more. The experiences that my craft has brought me to is truly humbling and also empowering. There were times where I’d sort of step back from what was on my screen and tell myself, “YOU are working on THIS,” with a sort of wondered disbelief at my own capability and where it got me. I recognise every day how lucky i am to do something that I genuinely love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I find that what keeps me open to opportunity, and in general, to the sweetness that life offers is a genuine openness to people, a curiosity to learn, and an awareness to understand that everything is a lesson if you choose to let it teach you. I often find that people categorize all of these things into separate boxes, but I find it important to always lead with these modes of thinking in tandem.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes!
I am always looking to collaborate with artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, etc. on video content. I have a wide eye for marketing, and obviously love my profession of video editing, and am always looking to collaborate. I often do things on the cheap/for free simply to create with others and to experience the joy that comes from that. I’m always pounding the pavement to find some sort of edit to do, and I love the things that appear on my path as a result of that.
