We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Haley Reynolds. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Haley below.
Haley, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
One thousand percent from my childhood. Growing up for my brother and I was not easy. Luckily, we always had each other. We were taught from a very young age, that we better learn to stand on our own two feet, because there was no other option. We were in constant survival mode, living in a single parent household. Both of our parents were severe drug and alcohol addicts. Anyone who has had a family member with this awful addiction, knows just how painful it can be. I was more like a mother to my brother than a sister. To this day, we are extremely close and I am not sure I would be here today if I didn’t have the constant thought of “my younger brother deserves to have someone he can look up to and rely on”. I think as the older sibling in this situation, that is the role we tend to take on. Learning to put everyone else’s needs above our own.
The amazing thing is, we talk about how we would never change any of it because it made us into the resilient people we are today. We know that we can get through anything life throws our way, we can and we will do hard things. And, we are both entrepreneurs! Maybe a little part of us (or a big part…HA!) thrives in the chaos that comes with running your own business. The ups and downs, doing and achieving things we never thought possible! I am a firm believer that doing the hard thing, only makes you stronger. There are many hard moments in entrepreneurship, and I always know there is light at the end of every tunnel because of the things I have gone through. We may not understand in the moment why this difficult thing is happening, but it is always revealed and we are always better off because we made it through!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At prettypeoplepop, we are redefining natural skincare. By elevating the typical “crunchy” aesthetic to a more luxurious, fun, and modern look. We aim to connect with women who appreciate holistic living and stylish, high-quality products and lifestyle. Our target audience is diverse, confident, busy, ambitious women. We hope to inspire them to embrace their natural beauty while celebrating their love for life’s little luxuries.
There seemed to be a major gap in the ‘crunchy’ world every time I dove in. If you weren’t perfectly holistic and healthy, you did not belong with their brand community. Where were the brands for ‘scrunchy women’ (a selectively crunchy crowd)? At prettypeoplepop, we embrace women for where they are at on their holistic journey. Maybe they have never tried a natural skincare product, or that’s all they use but still spray pounds of dry shampoo in their hair every day (guilty as charged). We like this little thing called balance!
We truly believe in the power of natural skincare and all the benefits it has not only for our skin, but our entire bodies as well. With zero endocrine disruptors (hormone disruptors), parabens, or synthetic fragrances, we are promoting “all things pretty from the inside out”. We prioritize our internal health just as much as our external. And I think that is what makes prettypeoplepop so valuable to women.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say my experience in the beauty industry for over eight years, developing people skills, and simply not quitting. My experience in the beauty industry allows for me to really understand what women are looking for in their personal care products. I got to have in depth conversations with women of all backgrounds and ages. Listening to their concerns about what they like and don’t like, and what makes them feel good and what doesn’t. Especially when it comes to aging, discovering what they wish they had done more of when they were younger to keep themselves and their skin happy and healthy.
I was always a pretty shy kid, I wanted to hide and not be noticed. Unless, I was with a group of really close friends, they might tell you I was a goofball! Going into the beauty industry, I knew I had to work on not being shy, and learn how to have my most dreaded conversations, small talk. The greatest piece of advice I could give someone who is shy and wants to work on their people skills as well, it would be to ask people questions about themselves. People love to talk about themselves you will come to find! This advice helped me so much, and I would literally make myself practice with random people. Someone could be walking their dog, I would ask them questions about their dog. A lady could be walking in to my apartment and I would ask how her day was going. I recently had an experience in the women’s sauna at my gym, I noticed she was putting some type of organic looking product on herself and I started asking her questions about it. By the end of the conversation, she followed me on prettypeoplepop’s instagram and by the time I got home I had an order from her! I was so proud of myself! The old version of me would have never sparked up conversation for no reason, and now I can do it with whoever and whenever! I had a therapist tell me “You are an introvert that knows how to act in extroverted situations” and nothing has ever rang more true. But it has taken me purposefully putting myself in uncomfortable situations and practicing, so that over time, they are not so uncomfortable.
We live in a world where when things get tough, most people quit. More than half of being successful nowadays means to not give up. If you can do that, you will be doing better than 90% of people out there. Things are going to be extremely difficult at times when you are running your own business. There will be days when you want to light it all on fire and never look back. The key is, to not act on those spiral thoughts, let them pass, and keep going. You are so much stronger and resilient than you think you are and the best way to prove that to yourself is by not quitting when the going gets tough!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We love to collaborate! Especially with other woman owned small businesses. Or women who are leading the way towards happier, healthier lifestyles for others. One of my personal favorite things to witness in life, is watching other women grow into their fullest potential. And if we can be a part of helping that dream become a reality, we want to help! Collaborations are the best way for both parties involved to get their message and products shown to more people, which results in more women getting the help and support they need!
