Meet Hannah Davis

We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hannah , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

I grew up in Colorado and come from a family where service and community are in our bones. My dad is a 30+ year Westminster firefighter and my mom was involved in our school committees, church, community organizations, and professionally, she supports top leaders of the Peaks Region of Intermountain Health. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to me that I ended up in a career field that was embedded in service and community.

After college, I joined the Reading Partners team in 2019 as a Volunteer Coordinator; first serving a year through AmeriCorps. This service year gave me the opportunity to connect with 900+ volunteers who, for various motivations, give an hour or more of their time to empower students. On top of the community engagement aspect, the students I’ve worked with during my 5 years at Reading Partners have been the most inquisitive, capable, brilliant young minds I’ve ever had the honor of meeting. It’s impossible to work with them and not want to “leave it all on the field” during each and every lesson.

My familial upbringing, along with the experiences I’ve had through my role at Reading Partners, paved the way for a career rooted in service. However, to ask “where my generosity comes from” would be giving too much credit; that characteristic is best used to describe to our volunteers, teachers and school leaders, and communities that power our work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Reading Partners, at its core, is an educational equity nonprofit focused in the area of children’s literacy. We provide 1:1 literacy tutoring to K-4 students in Title 1 schools who have fallen behind on grade-level literacy. We mobilize community members (in-person and online) to work with our students using a data-driven, pre-scripted curriculum. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it works.

The work that Reading Partners does aims to level that playing field; providing more equitable access to resources that students need to succeed. Our program empowers the amazing students we work with to discover and unlock their potential.

As Colorado’s Community Engagement Manager, I use my experience in recruitment and community building to attract diverse volunteers across the state to serve our students. My team focuses on the recruitment, onboarding, training, retention, and engagement of hundreds of volunteers. It is my JOY to help others discover how their experiences and unique selves can help invest in a young reader.
