We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Hannah, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I am someone who is really open about my past and current mental health struggles. It wasn’t always that way though. Growing up I suppressed my emotions and coped with my mental health struggles in unhealthy ways. I was definitely nervous to become a business owner because of my struggles with anxiety and depression, and nervous about how I would cope through new challenges. But now that I’m one year into business ownership I can confidently say I have turned my pain into passion. Of course I have my days but I try to remain open, take time to myself to recharge when needed, and make sure that my work is a true authentic honest reflection of who I am. I’m extremely blessed to have the support an amazing community around me and God who I can always run to when I need help or to talk about things. I think the bonus is I truly love being an esthetician, starting this career 12 years ago and it’s been the one constant in my life and always bringing me so much joy. Biggest piece of advice to someone struggling and nervous to leap into entrepreneurship: if you already love what you do, just take the leap and the rest will work out later and don’t let the losses consume you.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Growing up I didn’t have a lot of passions, I struggled with feeling that I belonged anywhere so I had no idea what my future would look like. At 18 I knew for sure I wanted to do a trade and I had always loved the beauty industry so I went straight to esthetics school. From there I struggled to get my foot in the door, and finally got my first dermatology job after having several really terrible first jobs. Dermatology was amazing and I learned so much getting to work under amazing doctors.
Now 12 years later I have taken the leap and am one year into owning my own business. It definitely came with challenges, I didn’t have big investor or loan, and im a single woman making ends meet, but it’s the best decision I ever made.
I’m now at one year in getting ready to move from a salon suite to my first storefront in Berry Hill in Nashville soon!
At The Skin Angel Aesthetics I focus on results driven facial treatments including acne, dark spots, aging etc. I focus to provide a relaxed environment where you can be your authentic self and show up however you need. I’m excited for my new space which will open late July 2025. I hope to have you in too!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say my openness in life and being able to relate and talk to anyone in any walk of life has been a really impactful part of growth in my career. I genuinely love hearing peoples story and making sure they feel comfortable in my presence. Treating someone’s skin can feel vulnerable so I’ve always strived to give people the best experience and remind them that their needs are important. There’s something to learn from everyone. Another piece of advice for anyone wanting to get into esthetics: I cannot preach enough the importance of continued education, learning your niche, and perfecting your craft. There’s always more to learn, and more growth to be had. Especially if you want to go out and start a business, having that foundation is so important.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents are my biggest supporters and have always been my cheerleaders on this journey and without that I would not be here. They believe in me when I don’t believe in myself, and are always encouraging me when I hit a low point. My parents are both entrepreneurs so I’m extremely thankful for their love and support as they can give me advice and help me when I’m stuck. My dad always said my career is the one thing no one can take away from me, and that’s always stuck with me.
