Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hannah Korte. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Hannah , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
To be honest I don’t think I have fully overcome it. But It’s important to remind yourself that you are in the room for a reason. People have come to you for your expertise and your work for a reason! You are good at what you do! It’s just important to keep reminding yourself of that!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love the feeling when your photograph comes out exactly like or even better then you wanted. I create my art so I can show other people the world through my eyes. It’s a way to make scenarios from my imagination become reality. My art gives me a way to express my thoughts and communicate ideas with others in the easiest way I find possible. Until I started college, I was self-taught. I work primarily with digital photography. The majority of my personal work involves constructing some sort of set or prop from my imagination which I try to make on my own, and I try to incorporate that in to commissioned work as well.
I graduated from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. I assist and retouch for commercial photographers as well as photograph weddings, product images, and capture everyday milestones for families in the area. Most of my focus currently is trying to expand and create more opportunities to work with couples celebrating engagements or looking for maternity photos as well as trying to gain more clients in the boudoir realm! I love the empowerment you can walk away with from a boudoir shoot. It gives me great joy to give women a space to see themselves as powerful individuals! On the less serious side, I am also trying to perfect the “80’s mall photo” which is a set up I like to offer my clients and give them to opportunity to wear some of their best 80’s fashion and take some ridiculous photos!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think something that has really been beneficial to me is being able to create a space in my photoshoot where people can be comfortable and be themselves. I’m a big believer in giving my clients a setting where they can be comfortable enough to let their personalities shine through. I love to collaborate with them to have their vision come to life while still staying true to my style as well and learning that balance is important. Learning to say no and set boundaries is something else that is greatly beneficial, especially when you are running a business by yourself. Not everything or everyone is meant for you and that is OKAY. It’s better to say no to things and set boundaries so you can give your best to what you actively choose to take on.
Finally, learning that getting turned down or not getting a job is not the end of the world. KEEP GOING. You just need one yes for a dream job and if you quit too soon, you may never even get to that point!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents did for me was support me unconditionally. Photography is not necessarily the most lucrative job or secure career path, but they have always been behind me 100% in any endeavor I’ve taken on.
