We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Rupp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
When I first started my fashion blog and personal stylist journey, I felt like everyone was so far ahead of me. The best piece of advice I heard at that time was, “Imagine that somebody new to your industry wants to know everything that you can teach them. How does that make you feel? Do you feel like an expert?” It completely changed everything for me. Moving forward, I keep that advice in the back of my mind whenever I walk into a room at an industry event. I may not know everything, but I certainly know a lot and can be a help to others!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a lifelong thrifter who shares my secondhand shopping adventures on my fashion blog, TheOutfitRepeater.com. I care a lot about finding good deals and getting the most wear out of my wardrobe.
When I’m not thrifting, I love fashion and have a day job as a social media manager for local businesses, including Maurices and Goodwill. I love 1980s pop culture, so you can find me reading The Baby-sitters Club, watching a John Hughes movie, or listening to a cassette tape.
My most recent challenge is opening up an Etsy store, Shop Made In The Past, to sell my handmade jewelry (another passion of mine). Every piece is upcycled from thrift store items!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being thrifty was instilled in me from birth, and I believe that having that skill has served me well in life. As an adult, I’m literally able to share that skill with others and teach them via my blog how to incorporate it into their own lives.
When it comes to sharing about your life and passions online, I think it helps to share from an authentic place. Talk about what you know best and be genuine about connecting with and learning from others. You never know where those connections might lead!
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I manage unpredictable symptoms every day from an invisible illness. Despite the challenges, getting my health conditions diagnosed gave me new insight into the limits and obstacles I’ll face in the future and altered my priorities for my life and well-being.
I used to feel behind all of my peers, but now I feel like my invisible illness is a superpower. I have developed tools over the years to help me reach my personal and professional goals that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about.
Being sick has definitely made me more creative and resourceful with everything that I do, but especially with my fashion blog!
