We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Scharr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I haven’t always been as confident as I am now. I was bullied some throughout school and didn’t have the best of luck with friendships so I found myself spending a lot of time alone. However, when COVID came in 2020 I began experimenting with fashion more and picked up on photography after buying my first camera. Following this, I decided to start taking pictures of my outfits and making videos on social media about my “outfit of the day”, thrift hauls, and even my own clothing design. My social media caught the eyes of a few photographers and I began booking shoots regularly. Hearing feedback from photographers and other models about “being a natural” definitely boosted my confidence, and when I saw how beautiful I looked in the photos, it gave me a new perspective on who I am and helped me find a true unconditional love for myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Professionally I am focused in editorial modeling, but also do runway modeling and some acting all over North Carolina. I have been published in multiple magazines, some international, and appeared in many music videos as well. When I am not modeling, I am a full time student working towards my Bachelor’s degree. As for upcoming events, I am extremely eager for my participation in Charlotte Fashion week 2024 on September 17th, 19th, and 20th.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I first began modeling, there were a few things I wish I would have known. First, step out of your comfort zone. There were so many opportunities that I passed up just because I was afraid of how it would go, and there were also a million opportunities that went amazingly just because I pushed myself to try something new. Second, study yourself. I have spent countless hours in front of the mirror studying my facial expressions, the contours of my body, different poses I could try, how fashion looks on me, and I can confidently say I know how I look from every single angle, distance, and perspective. Lastly, create inspiration boards! Anytime I am inspired by someone/something I write it down, take a screenshot, or keep track of it because I have so many great ideas that must be executed and writing it down makes it so easy to visualize and have on hand rather than just trying to remember everything.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have been modeling for only 7 months so my entire journey so far has consisted of absorbing all of the information about the modeling industry as I can and fostering consistent growth by being determined to do higher quality work after every shoot/show/event. My confidence is the key to driving my creativity and motivation, and watching that aspect of my identity develop so strongly over this short amount of time is my biggest accomplishment.
