Meet Harold Reid

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Harold Reid. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Harold below.

Harold, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Well to be honest it’s hard sometimes to stay creative and find new music to add to my shows and to come up with ideas on new music to write. Mostly I just listen to the newest hit songs that are out and sometimes dig deep into old music that I enjoy that I may not have listened to in a while and will decide to try and add some of those songs to my gig playlist. As far as creating original music I’ve found that it’s better to not try to create something and just get inspiration from all types of music and even other musicians that are friends. When I get inspiration from these things I’ll be like, hey thats a cool beat but what if it did this instead and sounded like a different genre. Before I know it I have a new song written and it’s nothing like what I had in mind when I started. It keeps things interesting and not boring when writing music.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Well I’m obviously a Sax player. I do play a lot more than the saxophone but I’ve made a career of playing the Saxophone as a solo artist (Sax Man). I play all types of music venues, private events, parties, restaurants, etc… One of the biggest misunderstandings about me is that I’m not a jazz artist. Although I do like to play jazz, when I do gigs I play normal popular music of all genres. I like to have fun when I play and want my listeners to do the same. Right now I’m working on two projects at the moment. The first one is a new cover album that will be out by February. The second project is a collaboration album with a very talented musician and friend that I hope to have out sometime this year. I will also have one of my Original songs featured on the Grammy Awards weekend livestream on January 31.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The biggest impact on my career would have to be my high school band director. Without him teaching me the fundamentals of being able to play my instrument I definitely wouldn’t be doing what I do today. He gave me a love and passion for music and introduced me to different types of music that have had a huge impact on my musical selection that I perform. The second thing that has had an impact on my career is my son whom is also a musician. He encourages me to keep pushing and not to give up and keep chasing the dream of music. The last thing would be just the motivation to prove everyone wrong that never believed in me or my music.

The best advice I could give anyone is to never give up. Even if you fall on your face multiple times and you’re tired. Get back up dust yourself off and keep going. Don’t wait for things to happen for you, get out there and make something happen for yourself.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Being in the music industry definitely can be overwhelming sometimes and it’s hard not to want to throw in the towel. What I usually do when I start to get overwhelmed or even drained sometimes is just to stop, take a breath, and take some me time. I’ll listen to some music or play some video games that help me to relax and keep my sanity so to speak.

So my advice would be to find something that relaxes you and gets your mind off of whatever is causing you to be overwhelmed or frustrated and take some time to yourself and do a self care day and just chill.
