Meet Harriette St.ledger

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Harriette St.ledger. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Harriette below.

Harriette, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

As an actor it can be very easy to loose your motivation and creativity as you wait for the next job to come. That’s why I am so grateful I have found my love for film-making and writing. Having that outlet has definitely helped me keep my creativity alive. And when I’m running low on inspiration I love to watch films, go to art galleries, and people watch. Going for a walk and really taking notice of everything around me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an actor and filmmaker from a tiny town in Australia. I started acting when I was 6 and have been obsessed with it ever since. It’s something I don’t think I will ever get tired of. I found my love for filmmaking more recently, I started making films in media classes in high school. Writing always felt a bit out of my depth, but I’m someone who loves a challenge. I’m so glad to have found something that pushes me beyond my limits. It’s so exciting to see my work grow each year. My most recent project that I am co-writing and starring in is a dark-comedy thriller pilot “Queens of the Desert’. The story follows a group of young beauty queens and their pageant coach in the 80’s. On route to a beauty pageant their bus breaks down and all hell breaks loose as bodies pile up. It’s been so much fun to create this world and I can’t wait to see where the series will end up.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Determination is definitely key in this industry. You never know when the next job will come, and sometimes it can feel a bit pointless, like you are auditioning to a void. But I truly believe success in this business is 50% talent and 50% perseverance.
I also think people skills and genuine kindness goes a long way. No one wants to work with someone they won’t get along with, especially if you’re going to be working with that person for a long time.
And passion! Passion is infectious and such a great quality when you are speaking to other creatives.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Honestly just going for a walk has always been a real life saver for me. I’m someone who can get quite stuck in my head, and if I am at home catastrophizing I won’t be able to get anything done. I can send myself into a spiral. It’s times like that where I just need to give myself at least ten minutes to go outside and go for a walk. It sounds so simple but honestly it just resets your mind and helps release any pent up adrenaline.
