Meet Harrison Bard

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harrison Bard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Harrison , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

Growing up, both my parents were small business owners. My mom started an interior design private practice, and my dad ran a small family-owned business that was originally started by my grandfather. They worked extremely hard every single day, and it inspired me to start my own business, which I was lucky enough to do. During the great recession, my dad’s business went bankrupt and I saw how hard he had to work to put all the pieces back together.

On the business side, I found my purpose by creating compliant and transparent pre-roll cannabis accessories available at Custom Cones USA and DaySavers. After discovering that there are many microbials and pesticides in rolling papers, it became my purpose to deliver high-quality products that ensure a safe smoking experience for consumers. As a business, we also find purpose in giving back to the community by partnering with charities through our American Flag and LGBTQ+ Cones For A Cause products to donate a percentage of sales.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Our two main businesses are Custom Cones USA and Daysavers. Custom Cones USA is the preeminent expert in the B2B pre-roll space, specializing in pre-rolled paper products, pre roll production machines, and pre roll packaging. We consider ourselves to be pioneers in the industry since we started the company before pre-rolls became a big part of total cannabis sales. In fact, pre-rolls just surpassed flower as the #1 category in Canada, and we played a large part in that transition. Custom Cones USA was the first company to offer bulk blunt cones, pre-roll tubes with rolling paper and cannabis-friendly filter tips, and glass, wood, and flavored tips. We have been offering high-quality and innovative products to companies for the last seven years.

Last year, we took our same dedication to compliance and innovation and brought it to consumers with DaySavers. Unlike cannabis products, there are no regulations or testing for rolling papers and smoking accessories, leading to heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials being found in products. Similar to Custom Cones USA, DaySavers offers ceramic tips, wooden tips, artisan tubes, and more! DaySavers also recently announced its involvement with the Science of Smokability study, a first-of-its-kind scientific research into the constituents of the smoke in cannabis. We are paying people to smoke joints and are collecting data through surveys. We are very excited about this study and the results it will produce.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One impactful quality is work ethic. I learned from my parents at an early age that you have to work hard to be successful. As I graduated and started working at Amazon, I was surrounded by some of the smartest and most hard-working people I have ever met in my life and it helped me further develop a strong work ethic.

Secondly, an important skill I have learned is to be open-minded. It is important to understand that you aren’t always right, in fact, you might be wrong most of the time. Having an open mind is especially important when working with a team – it is important to listen to what everyone has to say, and that will not only help you to work well with others but also spark creativity, and advance further.

Lastly, I have learned a lot about leadership and management over the past seven years. Starting a company for the first time is extremely difficult, and I made many mistakes at the beginning by not being a good manager myself or not hiring the right people for management positions. Through that process, I learned that I cannot manage everything myself and my team members need the strongest support. It is something I am still working on today and would emphasize its importance for other people in their journey.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Definitely! We are always looking to partner with other brands on custom, limited products. Without giving too many details away, we are actively creating a product associated with the rave, EDM scene and are looking for music festivals, clothing companies, or musicians to partner with. Separately, we are also looking to work with a pizza company or brand on a product as well – more to come! Lastly, if you are a dispensary or retail store that sells smoking accessories, reach out! We would love to have you carry DaySavers products.

On the Custom Cones USA side, we are always looking to partner and collaborate with other businesses to help expand their brand. We can create any custom pre-roll format, help scale your processes with machinery, and help brands differentiate themselves with innovative branding and packaging.
