Meet Heath Biller

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heath Biller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Heath, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is a challenge many of us face, especially during significant career transitions. For me, it surfaced when I shifted from healthcare to financial advising three years ago. While I was a dedicated healthcare professional, my passion for finance was undeniable. I found myself drawn to investment books and financial articles, and I consistently encouraged my colleagues to become more knowledgeable about their own finances and take advantage of the investment opportunities offered by our hospital. I was eager to become an entrepreneur, as it became clear that I wanted to help people improve their financial health, just as I’d helped patients improve their physical health.

Of course, switching careers brings a wave of self-doubt: ‘Am I qualified? Can I really do this?’ Those questions are normal, but I knew consistent effort would be key. Jim Cathcart’s quote, ‘If you will spend one extra hour each day studying your chosen field, you’ll be a national expert in that field in five years or less,’ resonated deeply. I committed to the hard work, knowing continuous learning would build my confidence and expertise. While I’m only three years in and not a national expert yet, I feel confident and proud when I can assist my colleagues, those whom I previously asked questions of, with their questions.

What fueled me was the realization that while the finance world has many brilliant minds, not everyone prioritizes their clients’ best interests. I saw an opportunity to provide genuine, ethical, and knowledgeable service as a fiduciary. I dedicated countless hours to mastering financial planning and leveraging Google Workspace to enhance my practice and efficiency. It’s amazing how much technology you can access for just $14 a month, which is why I think it is one of the best times for entrepreneurs to start a business. Leveraging this technology has been crucial for delivering efficient and effective service to my clients.

Beyond the technical skills, the soft skills I honed in healthcare proved incredibly transferable. Empathy, respect, active listening, diligent follow-up, organization, and punctuality – these are universal qualities that build trust and strong relationships, whether you’re treating patients or guiding clients through their financial journeys.

Overcoming imposter syndrome is about recognizing your strengths, acknowledging your passion, and committing to continuous growth.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My journey into financial advising began with a desire to empower healthcare professionals. As a former provider, I saw colleagues struggle with managing investments and feeling overwhelmed by financial planning. That’s where my passion for finance and helping others converged.

I became an entrepreneur to provide clear, empathetic, and accessible financial guidance. I believe in building genuine partnerships and understanding my clients’ needs before developing personalized plans.

I leverage technology like Altruist, RightCapital, and Holistiplan to streamline investing, visualize goals, and optimize tax strategies. This allows my clients to focus on what they do best – caring for their patients.

My service starts with a no-obligation meeting to ensure we’re the right fit. Then, we gather information, define goals, and craft a personalized roadmap.

I’m passionate about helping healthcare professionals achieve financial peace of mind. It’s rewarding to see them gain confidence over time.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

#1 Adaptability: The world is changing fast. We need to constantly adapt and grow our knowledge to stay ahead. This means keeping up with industry trends, mastering new technologies, and expanding our skillset.

#2 Communication: Clear and effective communication is essential for building strong relationships, understanding client needs, and providing valuable service. This includes active listening, clear explanations, and asking the right questions.

#3 Tech Savviness: Technology continues to make us much more efficient and effective. Embracing the right tools can really enhance how we serve clients. If you aren’t using it, your competitors will be.

The best way to develop or improve on these is to learn from someone who is already doing it well and don’t be afraid to ask them lots of questions.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

I’m going to recommend three books that have been incredibly impactful for me:

1. Essentialism by Greg McKeown: This book helps you identify what truly matters most in your life and eliminate the distractions that are holding you back. It’s a powerful guide to focusing on the essential and achieving greater clarity.

2 Atomic Habits by James Clear: Once you know what to focus on, this book provides a practical framework for building good habits and breaking bad ones. It’s full of actionable strategies for making small changes that lead to remarkable results over time.

3. Grit by Angela Duckworth: This book explores the power of passion and perseverance in achieving long-term goals. It provides compelling insights into how to cultivate grit and resilience, especially when facing challenges and setbacks.

I believe this sequence provides a powerful roadmap for growth. By first clarifying your priorities, then building the right habits, and finally cultivating the grit to persevere, you’ll be well-equipped to achieve your goals.
