Meet Heather Bostick

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Bostick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Heather, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from a blend of personal experiences, values instilled by my parents, and a deep passion for what I do. Growing up, my parents taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. They always emphasized that if you’re going to do something, you should do it to the best of your ability. This mindset has been a guiding principle in my life, whether it was during my 17-year career as a teacher or now as a floral designer.

Transitioning from teaching to floral design wasn’t easy, but it was a dream I’d held onto for a long time. The challenges I faced along the way—learning new skills, building a business from the ground up, and navigating the ups and downs of the wedding industry—have all contributed to my resilience. Each challenge has been an opportunity to grow, adapt, and reaffirm my commitment to my craft.

My passion for floral design also fuels my resilience. I genuinely love what I do, and that passion drives me to push through difficult times. When things get tough, I remind myself of the joy and beauty that flowers bring to people’s lives, especially on such important occasions as weddings. Knowing that my work plays a part in creating lasting memories for others gives me the strength to keep going, even when the road gets rough.

Finally, I’ve learned to view setbacks as part of the journey, not as failures. Every challenge is a lesson that makes me stronger and better at what I do. Resilience, to me, is about embracing those challenges, staying flexible, and continuing to move forward with determination and a positive attitude.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a wedding floral designer with a deep passion for transforming a couple’s vision into breathtaking floral creations. At the heart of what I do is the belief that flowers have the power to tell stories, evoke emotions, and create unforgettable memories. My work is all about bringing the glamour and couture designs of fashion into the world of floral artistry, making every wedding feel like a one-of-a-kind celebration.

What excites me the most about my work is the opportunity to blend creativity with personalization. Every wedding is unique, and I love collaborating with couples to design floral arrangements that are not just beautiful, but also deeply meaningful. Whether it’s crafting a stunning bridal bouquet that complements the dress perfectly or designing an entire venue’s floral décor that ties together the couple’s theme and colors, I strive to create moments that will be cherished for a lifetime.

My brand, Fashionable Florist, stands out because of our commitment to both luxury and sustainability. We’re dedicated to providing couture-styled florals that make our clients feel like they’re walking down the runway. At the same time, we’re eco-conscious, using sustainable practices like biodegradable foam and chicken wire in our installations to reduce our environmental impact.

In terms of what’s new, we’re constantly innovating to offer our clients the best experience possible. We’ve recently expanded our services to include bespoke rental items like compotes, vases, and structures that complement our floral designs, allowing us to create fully cohesive looks for weddings and events. Additionally, we’re excited to offer private flower bar parties and workshops, where participants can learn the art of floral design in a fun and interactive setting.

For those planning a wedding or special event, I’d love to be part of your journey. My goal is to exceed expectations and push the boundaries of floral design, ensuring that your day is nothing short of magical.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey in wedding floristry, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been particularly impactful:

1. Creativity and Artistic Vision
Why It’s Important: Creativity is the heart of floral design. It allows you to envision unique arrangements that reflect each couple’s personality and love story. Artistic vision goes beyond just arranging flowers; it’s about crafting an experience that will be remembered.

Advice: To develop this, immerse yourself in different art forms, whether it’s painting, photography, or interior design. Surround yourself with inspiration from nature, architecture, and fashion. Practice by experimenting with different styles and techniques. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try something new—this is how you’ll find your signature style.

2. Attention to Detail and Organization
Why It’s Important: The success of a wedding often lies in the details. From the selection of blooms to the execution of the design, every element must be meticulously planned and organized. A small oversight can have a big impact on the overall outcome.

Advice: Develop strong organizational skills by creating systems that work for you, such as detailed checklists and timelines. Use tools and software that can help manage the logistical aspects of your work. Cultivate a habit of double-checking everything—from orders to final setups. Over time, you’ll find that this attention to detail becomes second nature.

3. Resilience and Adaptability
Why It’s Important: The wedding industry is fast-paced and often unpredictable. Weather changes, last-minute client requests, or supply issues can arise unexpectedly. Being resilient and adaptable allows you to stay calm under pressure and find solutions quickly.
Advice: Build resilience by embracing challenges and viewing them as opportunities to grow. Practice staying calm in stressful situations and develop problem-solving skills. Learn to be flexible and open-minded, ready to pivot when necessary. Experience will teach you that no wedding goes exactly as planned, and that’s okay—being adaptable is what will set you apart.

Advice for Those Early in Their Journey
Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can guide you and provide insights based on their experiences. Learning from others can help you avoid common pitfalls and accelerate your growth.
Continuous Learning: The floral industry is constantly evolving, so stay curious and keep learning. Attend workshops, follow industry trends, and invest in your education. The more knowledge you acquire, the more confident and capable you’ll become.
Network and Build Relationships: Success in this industry is not just about what you know, but who you know. Build strong relationships with vendors, clients, and other professionals in the industry. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

By focusing on developing creativity, organization, and adaptability, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate the challenges of wedding floristry and create beautiful, unforgettable experiences for your clients.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Balancing the Excitement and Challenges of Wedding Floristry

Specializing in wedding floristry is a unique blend of excitement and pressure. The commitment to creating something truly special can feel overwhelming, but I always remind myself that this is the couple’s special day. I focus on the beauty of the moment, knowing that when they look back at their wedding photos, they’ll remember the joy and elegance I helped create.

Communication: The Key to a Low-Stress Wedding Day

For many couples, their wedding is one of the first major investments and a significant milestone in their lives. I believe that the foundation of a low-stress wedding day is clear and open communication. This begins with our initial consultation, where we discuss their vision, budget, and specific needs. By aligning expectations early on, we can work together to create a memorable experience without unnecessary stress.

Organized Planning for Seamless Execution

Effective planning and organization are crucial to ensuring that every wedding goes off without a hitch. Fortunately, my floral software helps streamline my workflow, offering checklists that are essential for accuracy. It helps me verify that the flowers ordered match the required quantities and that the stem counts for each arrangement are precise. Plus, there’s a satisfying sense of accomplishment in ticking off tasks as they’re completed.

The Importance of a Reliable Team

Time is of the essence in wedding floristry, with everything needing to be perfectly in place before the guests arrive. Having a dependable team is vital, especially in the days leading up to the wedding. Whether it’s prepping flowers, designing arrangements, or setting up on the big day, a strong team ensures that every detail is handled with care and precision.

Reflecting and Practicing Self-Care

After the setup is complete, I make it a point to step back and appreciate the hard work that has gone into making the couple’s day unforgettable. It’s equally important to practice self-care during these high-pressure moments. Taking breaks to gain fresh perspectives and staying nourished helps maintain focus and energy, ensuring that I can give my best to each wedding.
