We recently connected with Heather Buechler and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
In sustaining the vibrancy of my creativity, I embrace a rhythmic dance between prolific productivity and serene repose. Much like the ebb and flow within the strokes of my abstract paintings, my creative process is a delicate balance of activity and tranquility. During moments of intense productivity, I immerse myself in the canvas, drawing inspiration from the interconnected realms of spirituality and universal inter-connectivity. Yet, I am equally devoted to the art of stillness. It is within these serene interludes that I recharge, allowing my intuition to flourish. Each stroke on the canvas is not merely a brush of color but a manifestation of the harmonious convergence of purpose and tranquility, a testament to the cyclical nature of creativity in its most authentic form.
It’s essential for me as an artist to acknowledge the wisdom in granting myself moments of respite amid the creative journey. Recognizing the inherent value in cycles of rest, I understand that true artistic growth extends beyond the strokes on the canvas. During these intervals of non-creation, I engage in purposeful activities that contribute to the refinement of my craft. Whether it’s updating websites, framing work or applying for shows, these endeavors have become integral components of my artistic evolution. In the quietude between painting sessions, I find solace in honing my skills through diverse channels, reinforcing the belief that nurturing the artist within extends beyond the act of creation itself. It’s not just permissible but imperative to embrace these phases where creativity manifests in different forms, sustaining the delicate equilibrium between active artistic expression and the silent nurturing of my craft
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My abstract paintings are based on inter-connectivity and spirituality. As such, at first glance my art appears to be merely abstract, but upon careful visual interaction with it one cannot help but feel the soothing peacefulness that emanates from the canvas. This feeling isn’t coincidental – it is intentionally crafted and it is the force behind my work. This visual interpretation of universal connectivity allows the viewer to lose themselves within the borders of the canvas. On a rudimentary level, my work is about beauty, truth, and connectivity.
I begin every painting with a meditation. I studied Reiki energy healing and the Sutras of Zen Buddhism. These practices and spiritual beliefs are the essence of my artistic inspirations. I practice Reiki on myself, the canvas, and my painting tools. This allows me to connect to my intuition and creates a soothing space for me to paint. I make a request to the universe to make something that’s beautiful and meaningful for someone else. I believe each painting has a person that it’s meant for. Once I get in the flow the painting takes on a life of its own- balancing happy accidents with composition, color, and expression.
I am inspired by my Spiritual practice, experiences, dreams, travel, New England colors at sunset and nature. I use color as an emotive tool of expression. I oscillate between travel, study and research with periods of industrious painting and productivity.
In my new most recent series I have merged my spiritually-based artwork with digital media and self portraits. I digitally alter images of my paintings based on inter-connectivity to continue my spirituality based message. This new media blends our technologically advanced society with our human need to still connect with other people.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my artistic journey, many elements have significantly shaped my path. Most importantly, trusting my inner voice has been paramount. The ability to tap into my intuition, guided by the soothing energy cultivated through practices like Reiki and Zen Buddhism, has allowed me to infuse authenticity into my creations. To those embarking on their own artistic odyssey, my advice is to cultivate a deep trust in your inner voice. Listen to the whispers of your intuition, for within them lies the essence of genuine artistic expression.
Secondly, no matter what challenges arise, keep working passionately. Remember, amidst the journey, you will encounter both admirers and critics. Focus on those who love your work and ignore the critics, for their perspectives should not deter your commitment to your craft.
Lastly, maintaining unwavering faith in the trajectory of my artistic evolution has been a guiding force. Believing that I am on the right and perfect path for myself has infused my work with a sense of purpose and resilience. To those beginning their creative expedition, my advice is to cultivate a steadfast faith in your journey. Embrace the uncertainty, keep working passionately despite any criticisms, trust the process, and know that every stroke, whether intentional or serendipitous, contributes to the masterpiece that is your artistic evolution.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful gift my parents bestowed upon me is the unwavering belief in my strength and independence. From the earliest stages of my life, they instilled the conviction that I possess the capability to achieve anything I set my mind to. This invaluable lesson has been the cornerstone of my endeavors, especially in the realm of creativity. Their steadfast support for my artistic journey has been a constant, providing me with the freedom to explore and express myself. Their encouragement has not only fueled my creative pursuits but has also shaped my outlook on life, fostering a sense of resilience and self-assurance. In the vast canvas of my existence, their teachings form the vibrant strokes that compose the narrative of my strength, independence, and creative exploration.
