Hi Heather C., so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
I’ve had a series of heartbreaking losses since I was a child. I also experienced some near-death situations that gave me the gift of appreciating the small things in life. I’ve watched many people I cared about suffer from addiction, take their own lives, or pass away too soon. I’ve helped many of my beloved pets cross the rainbow bridge. When you witness someone take their last breath it changes you. You realize at that moment that nothing really matters but the relationships you have with others. There’s no material item that can replace the energy of that person or animal in your life. Once you experience loss you take less for granted and this naturally results in more empathy for others.

I’m a freelance copywriter with over ten years of experience who’s worked in corporate marketing departments for brands like Kaiser Permanente, Farmers Insurance, and AT&T. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities — strength, perseverance, and the willingness to walk my path despite external opinions — stand out as the most profound impact on my personal and professional growth. To those starting their journey, cultivating inner strength involves recognizing and embracing a deep self-awareness that becomes your main source of unwavering support.
Early in the journey, it’s crucial to acknowledge that setbacks are not failures but integral components of growth. Learn to forgive yourself for mistakes, understand that failures are stepping stones, and commit to getting back up, even if it means doing so repeatedly. This involves being attuned to your inner compass and embracing the courage to value personal authenticity over external validations.
Understand that not everyone will support your choices, especially if they don’t fit others’ expectations. Learning to set boundaries with those who may not align with your values or aspirations becomes a crucial aspect of navigating your journey. I discovered along the way that failures are not a sign of inadequacy but stepping stones to success.
Once you develop the skill of self-forgiveness, you recognize that each stumble is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the journey, forgive yourself for the inevitable missteps, and trust that each experience contributes to your unique narrative.
