We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by immersing myself in the art and culture that inspire me most—particularly Renaissance art. Visiting art museums allows me to connect with the timeless techniques of the Old Masters, such as their use of light, shadow, and composition, which I incorporate into my wedding photography to create images with depth and drama. I love images that are evocative and that stay with you. Wedding Photography is special in this way, as the images will live in many lives for generations to come.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I specialize in Weddings and Events. Creating from a collective vision and contributions of other creators is part of what makes wedding work so unique. My background is in Visual Arts/Art History. I carry this with me on every event I photograph. A painterly quality is important to constantly return to visually, and it guides my decision making on the event.
Currently, I’m focused on expanding my services to include destination weddings and keeping film as a standard part of my Client Experience.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe the three most impactful qualities in my journey as a wedding photographer have been my love for art, my willingness to take the road less traveled, and my unwavering commitment to never compromising on my dreams and creative vision.
-1. Love for Art: My passion for art has been the foundation of everything I do. It has shaped my perspective, helped me see beauty in the smallest details, and inspired me to create images that are transcendent. For those starting out, I recommend immersing yourself in art—visit museums, study different styles, travel, observe, observe, observe.
-2. Taking the Road Less Traveled: Choosing a path that’s unconventional or challenging has been pivotal in shaping my career. With great risk comes great reward. For others, I’d say don’t be afraid to take risks or follow a path that might not seem traditional or predictable—create art that is unafraid.
-3. Never Compromising on Dreams and Vision: Staying true to my creative vision has been essential in building a brand that reflects who I am as an artist. My advice is to truly fall in love with what you love. Stay patient, stay consistent, and run as far from mediocrity as you can.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I firmly believe that you should go all in on your strengths and not waste a minute trying to master something you’re not naturally gifted at. Time is precious, and the sooner you recognize where your talents lie, the faster you can focus on honing those skills and delivering your best work. For the areas where you’re not as strong, as fast as humanly possible, find someone who has a natural gift for those things. Surround yourself with people who are excelling in their own fields, completely different from your own.
Focus on what lights you up and brings out your best work, and let others handle the rest. That’s how you build something truly remarkable.
