Meet Heather Ervin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Ervin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.

Hi Heather, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My mom taught me to always be optimistic. She’s was the biggest cheerleader and source of encouragement throughout my life. When things didn’t go my way or were difficult. she found the silver lining. She lead by example and I am grateful to have been so lucky.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I started in floristry when I was in my young twenties and needed a summer job. I thought delivering flowers sounded fun, so I applied and got the job at a local florist. I learned how to process flowers, their names, started helping out answering phones and creating wrapped bouquets. Often times I’d need to wait for the designer to finish their creations before I could go on delivery, and one day I said “I think I could do that.” One of the designers took me under their wing and started teaching me the basics of design. I later attended floral design school and worked professionally as a designer for about a decade.
As much as I loved floral design, I needed a job with health care and other benefits and left full-time floristry for the publishing industry. I continued to design flowers for weddings and parties as a side job until I got married and had three kids.
Now life has taken a turn, and when presented with the opportunity to decide what do I want to do next, I couldn’t stop thinking about flowers and the career I loved so much. That’s when I decided to open Blushing Bouquet.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

expertise, courage, persistence
I considered other options for entrepreneurship and ultimately decided that I since I have expertise in the floral design field I have a lot to offer and knowledge base to start with.
Starting a business isn’t easy or fast. You have to have courage and believe in yourself and your plan. It can be easy to get distracted by competitors that are years ahead of you in marketing and social media, one day that will be you!
Have a great plan and be prepared to pivot when needed. You may need to go outside of your comfort zone with things like creating your own website, listing on Google, SEO, contacting leads or posting on social media. You just have to stick with it and keep going.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I would love to collaborate with event and wedding planners in the DC metropolitan area. I have designed thousands of floral arrangements in my career and can create florals in all styles.

I am easy to work with and my goal is to make every client beyond happy!
