Meet Heather Fay

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Fay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.

Heather, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve perpetuated my work ethic by always maintaining focus on the bigger picture and bigger goal in mind. That way no matter how many times I have to regroup, start over, or change course throughout the process, I can remain on track no matter the detour. This “zoom in and zoom out” mentality has allowed me to focus on each micro step while being able to simultaneously take a step back and make the proper executive decisions along the way to ensure a successful finished product.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an internationally charted, award winning singer, songwriter, record producer from my hometown Kansas City, MO. I frequently travel to Los Angeles, CA and have worked with Grammy award winning songwriters and producers to expand my music catalog. With millions of radio spins each week my single, “The One” charted internationally at #1 (for 5 consecutive weeks) and “Finally Free” charted at #3, both on the Euro Indie Music Charts. I have had my music published in the CBS soap opera, “The Young and Restless” along with winning an HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) for my R&B single, “Let’s Get Close.” While studying to receive my A.S. in Music Production and B.S. in Entertainment Business at the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood, I was also casted as a female lead in the independent feature film, “Rebel//Rebel” directed by Drew Harwood and distributed by 4X Emmy Award winner Jared Safier, of Safier Entertainment.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being adaptable, consistent, and humble have always been the three main components to my success in any and all endeavors.

Being adaptable has helped my projects reach success by me being able to take on more than one role as needed to ensure the overall goal is accomplished. If someone is unable to complete their task or is struggling I am able to step in and help out which keeps the momentum at a high level for everyone as we continue forward.

Being consistent in my execution of all plans, large and small, and always following through with what I say I’m going to do has made me a foundational piece and asset to every team I’ve been a part of (and it can help you move up the ranks quickly as people see they can always count on you). Last minute adjustments and changes are always going to happen but remaining consistent in my work ethic and quality or work have helped me leave a lasting impression on my network that carries over into each project.

Being humble has opened every window of opportunity I have ever encountered along my journey. Being able to start out as a small part of a team or project and being thankful for the opportunity regardless is what led to my successes with larger teams, budgets, and projects. It is okay to start out small and prove yourself as you work your way up and being able to adapt to whatever is needed out of you with a consistent quality of performance and grateful attitude will always pay off for you in the end.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
In today’s day-in-age it is so easy to feel overwhelmed at any given moment because of the vast amounts of distractions and information we take in every second of every minute. I help to prevent being overwhelmed as much as possible by constantly writing things down in a planner and notebook and always planning ahead. I can also adjust everything as needed if I start to feel overwhelmed and by adjusting in a planner format I can still see that everything will get done, how, and when even with changes being made. Writing everything down from ideas to to-do lists is a life saver along with block scheduling. My days are divided up into 4 hours blocks and I found that delegating tasks into categorized blocks is what works best for me in avoiding being overwhelmed and helping me push through, even if I am feeling overwhelmed. Even planning out your workout routines, meals, and miscellaneous errands will help you to better optimize your overall performance and efficiency in a healthy and balanced manner.
