Meet Heather Hughes

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Hughes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Heather , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My store was born out of a simple need—to create natural, healthy products for myself and my family. What began as small batches at home quickly grew when I realized others in my community wanted the same safe, effective alternatives. Over time, the purpose grew beyond the products. The store became a space where creativity could thrive, where local makers could share their work, and where community could come together. Today, my purpose is clear: to provide products that make everyday life healthier and more intentional, while creating a place that connects, uplifts, and celebrates the people around us.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At Twisted Violet Homestead, I create all-natural bath, body, and home products that are safe, effective, and made with care. What excites me most about this work is knowing that something I make with my own hands can truly help people—whether it’s easing a sunburn, calming irritated skin, or simply adding a little joy to their day. Beyond the products, my store has become a gathering space where community, creativity, and connection come together.

What’s special about Twisted Violet is that it’s more than a shop—it’s a place where local makers are supported, where customers can discover unique handcrafted items, and where we host classes and events that bring people closer.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that made the biggest impact on my journey were **creativity, persistence, and community-mindedness**. Creativity allowed me to take simple ideas—like making natural products for my family—and grow them into something unique that others could enjoy. Persistence kept me moving forward through the ups and downs of running a small business, reminding me that consistency matters more than perfection. And being community-minded helped me see that my store could be more than just a place to shop; it could be a space that connects and uplifts others.

For anyone starting out, my advice is this: **nurture your creativity** by giving yourself permission to experiment and learn through doing. **Build persistence** by setting small, achievable goals and celebrating progress, even when things feel slow. And **stay connected to your community**, because the relationships you form will sustain you, inspire you, and often open doors you didn’t even know were there.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one challenge I’m currently facing is balancing growth with capacity. As my business continues to expand—through product demand, community classes, and supporting other local makers—the workload often falls on me alone. While it’s exciting to see so much interest and momentum, it can also be difficult to keep up with production, restocking, and planning for future opportunities. I’m actively working on finding ways to streamline processes and create more efficient systems so that growth feels sustainable without losing the personal touch that makes my brand special.
