Meet Heather Jefferson

We recently connected with Heather Jefferson and have shared our conversation below.

Heather, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I have definitely experienced being the only Black Independent Insurance Broker/ Insurance Agency Owner in various rooms I walk into. This experience brings a mixture of emotions and feelings — from nervous emotions to grateful emotions to trying to make sure I connect with as many people in the room as possible and to display and show others outside of the insurance industry the “example of an outside the norm insurance agent”.

When I walk into rooms and I’m the only black woman in the room or the only black woman who’s an Independent Insurance Broker/ Insurance Agency Owner for almost a decade and half, I get a little nervous initially but I do not allow that feeling of being nervous take over and stop the reason I was invited or attending a particular event in the first place. I channel that nervous emotion into fuel to help me try to connect with as many people in the room as possible. I try to pass out a number of business cards or have new acquaintances to scan my mobile business card to be stored in my digital rolodex. So, I can ensure our conversation does not stop at us shaking hands, but I have future reference and their contact information to use at a later time.

In addition, I also channel the grateful emotion of me being in the room by invitation of others, someone mentioning my name and my knowledge/abilities (if I’m not in the room) or by me joining a meeting through my own connections. I further channel this grateful emotion by displaying and showing others in the room how an example of an “outside the norm” insurance agent carries their self and demonstrates integrity. I make sure I display Christian morals, above the standard disciplines, make sure I carry myself with class, dignity and with a high level of regards.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three Most Important Qualities/Skills that were most impactful in my career journey are: (1) Being Resilient, (2) Being Diverse and (3) Never Stop the Need for Learning.

I feel that within my career journey, I have encountered and learned from many people within my career – what to do well and what not to do in business ever. I have experienced various career levels within multi-million-dollar companies to small start-up companies/freelance work. I always try to take several overall qualities/skills of an organization with me after I finish my assignment with that particular company or depart and leave a company. I either develop those qualities/skills more and make it my own and/or see how my position’s job duties can be used as transferable skills to my next career position.

I have been truly blessed and grateful by God to have been able to work and hold very distinguishing positions at major financial institutions, major banking companies, well-known newspaper conglomerate organizations, freelancing at several people’s passion that turned into a business, and finally to me having a dream and turning it into a reality – my multi-state independent insurance brokerage!

Some advice I would share with new business owners/entrepreneurs whether early in their journey or established in their career in terms of how they can best develop their own unique craft and the way they do business. I would say (1) don’t share your complete dream/outlook with others, (2) remember to keep track of all of your accomplishments and works you have completed (big or small), and (3) take time to recharge and re-energize yourself weekly or once a month. And a bonus – takeaway I will share, it is always okay to pivot in your business, whether it’s a new business branch of your business or changing how you do business with your customers or business partners.

As a business owner/entrepreneur not everyone will share your passion, desire and drive to be a business owner/entrepreneur, so with that being said, do not share your ALL your business dreams/ business outlook with others. Everyone will not understand or sometimes will not support your business dreams and endeavors, therefore it’s best to keep most of those things close to you. Another suggestion I would share to business owners/entrepreneurs is to keep a business journal of your accomplishments (rather big or small) to give you motivation and encouragement on your hard days in business. This will give you an extra boost you need on those hard days and show you what you have already accomplished and to keep pushing forward. And lastly a suggestion I would tell business owners/entrepreneurs: take weekly or monthly recharge or re-energize breaks. As a business owner there will always be things to do and take care of for your business, make sure you are taking time away from your business and do something that relaxes you or something you enjoy doing outside of your business.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely, I am always looking for new business partners and additional insurance agents to collaborate with to help grow their business and also to help their clients, by being connected with my insurance brokerage. In the upcoming year, 2026, I will be bringing on more insurance agents in other states to help grow the Heritage Insurance Brokerage brand throughout the United States, in all lines of insurance business.

In addition, I would love to collaborate with more real estate agents, real estate brokers, mortgage officers, mortgage brokers, title escrow officers, home inspectors and credit repair agents to help their business and attract more clients by having a trusted and knowledgeable Insurance Broker counterpart.

Please feel free to reach out to me via email, [email protected] or call my office at 817-765-2099, so we can connect and find a time to help each other’s businesses!
