Meet Heather Kirchhoff

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Kirchhoff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Heather , so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

This is a good question!

It’s so hard to overcome creativity block, especially if you’re good at procrastinating like I am!

I’ve learned doing several things help.

The first thing I do is reread what I previously wrote! Then I’ll sit there and brainstorm. Sometimes I get an idea if I stare at the blank screen long enough!

I’ve also started leaving notes on where the scene is going if I know exactly what’s going to happen next but can’t finish the scene!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I write YA contemporary romance books!

I love writing. It’s so fun to see my stories come together and how they change from the first draft to the last!

I just had a release in July!

Smitten with You is a childhood friends to lovers romance. It’s the first book in the Smitten duology and has jealousy, adorable dogs/cats, supportive family and yearning.

Smitten #2 will be releasing summer 2026!

I also have an reluctant to lovers romance called The Last Time. It has he falls first, depression representation, falling in love again and a secret. Trigger warning: does mention suicide and has a hint of self-harm, bullying is on page

I dabbled in poetry as well and published a poetry book called Our Truths.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I learn the more I write and edit!

I’ve learned by watching other authors talk about their process and apply what works for me.

I love going through my manuscript and changing sentence structures to see what fits the best.

The more books I write and edit, the easier it becomes!

My advice is to ask for feedback, especially if you’re unsure about something. Hearing other opinions is very helpful!

It takes more than one person to finish a book!

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The biggest obstacle I’m currently facing is writing my next book.

I’ve been struggling all year to finish this story.

What am I doing to resolve this issue?

I’m showing up. I’m sitting down and writing even when I don’t necessarily want to.

I know by the time my book is completely done I’ll be so proud of it, like all of the ones that came before.
