Meet Heather Moore

We were lucky to catch up with Heather Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences. It is an innate human capacity that can be learned in anyone. I believe you first have to have a purpose. You have to be motivated to complete a goal. In completing that goal, you must be flexible and persistant. You can’t let people get in your way or draw you away from your goals. It’s helpful to believe in what you do and enjoy it. Confidence and commitment is important. I believe that positive training can make a difference in training your dog. I am one of the few positive trainers in this area and have had to stick to my beliefs and defend it on many occasions. I believe strongly that I can accomplish everything other trainers that are not soley positive in their methods using positive methods only!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Heather Moore and I own Wag It Better Dog Training and Boutique. I have been training dogs for 24 years. I am a positive trainer and use only positive methods to train dogs. I work with all breeds and all issues. I like developing a relationsip with clients and their dogs and teaching clients how to get the same relationship with their dog so they can communicate with each other. In 2021 I opened a dog boutique so that we could also have a training center for classes. The boutique has been especially fun as I get to pick out what I think your dog needs, wants, and looks cute wearing! I have added dog food to what we offer In our boutique this year. I did a bunch of research in what I wanted to carry and support when adding food. We only carry 3 brands of food. These brands are all made in a human grade facility and are excellent for your dog’s health. I encourage people to research what they are feeding their dog and how it is made as what I learned while researching was very alarming! I want to get the word out there that you do have a healthy option for your dog.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Before I was a dog trainer, I was a teacher. I got my degree in Elementary Education and taught in public schools in SC for 7 years. This made teaching dog training classes easy for me. It was natural to stand up in front of a group and show them how to do something! Instead of kids, I now teach people of all ages how to train their dog. Being an animal lover has made my job not work. I love what I do as I have taken a passion and turned it into a profitable business.
Don’t be afraid to get out there and try something. If it doesn’t work, make adjustments. You will never know if you don’t give something a try!
As for advice, I do encourage you to follow something that interests you personally. I love what I do and wish that for everyone.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I reach out to my team. I have surrounded myself with people that support our business. We work together like one big family. I know I am not great at all aspects of running a business so I have hired people that can handle my weaknesses. If I need help or back up, the people that I work with will step up! I highly recommend having a team of people you can trust. If you know you aren’t good at something, find someone who is that can help you in that area. FInd people that want you to succeed and want to help you along the way. Give them credit and reward them along the way so they know they are appreciated as well. I love the family I work with at Wag It Better.
