We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Randall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My sense of self-discipline developed early. As an only child, I learned to be both independent and self-motivated, whether that meant keeping myself engaged or staying accountable for my schoolwork. Over time, this evolved into a natural inclination to take initiative. I have always approached responsibilities with a mindset of stepping in where needed, rather than waiting for direction.
Early in my career, I worked in an environment that emphasized empowerment and ownership, which further strengthened these instincts. That foundation ultimately led me to entrepreneurship, where self-discipline is essential. I have confidence in my ability to stay focused, manage priorities, and follow through without external oversight.
At my core, I am driven by a commitment to personal excellence. I am not motivated by comparison to others, but by a desire to consistently perform at my highest standard.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I began my career in hospitality in the mid-1990s while still in college, and I have remained passionate about the industry ever since. In 2002, I became a professional wedding planner and founded First Coast Weddings and Events at a time when wedding planning was still a relatively uncommon service in Northeast Florida. With the internet in its early stages and social media not yet established, many of our earliest clients found us through traditional methods such as the Yellow Pages.
At that time, wedding planning was often viewed as a luxury reserved for higher-budget events. Over the years, however, the industry has evolved significantly, and so has our approach. Today, we work with a wide range of clients, venues, design styles, and budgets, ensuring each couple has the opportunity to create a wedding that reflects their vision.
Even after more than two decades, there is still some uncertainty about the role of a wedding planner. For some clients, we provide comprehensive support, guiding them through every aspect of the process, from venue selection and design development to logistical planning and execution. For others, we step in during the final stages to refine details, coordinate vendors, and ensure the wedding day unfolds seamlessly.
While weddings remain at the heart of what we do, our experience extends well beyond them. We also plan and coordinate social events, nonprofit fundraisers, trade shows, and corporate gatherings. Our longevity in the industry has given us the opportunity to work across a broad spectrum of events, and we take great pride in helping bring each one to life with care and precision.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Communication and Relationship Management
This industry is built on relationships. The ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and consistently with clients, vendors, and venue teams is essential. Early on, much of my growth came from learning how to listen carefully, set expectations, and navigate difficult conversations with grace.
Advice:
Take the time to refine how you communicate in all forms. Be responsive, be clear, and always follow through. Strong relationships will carry your business further than any marketing strategy.
2. Organization and Attention to Detail
Successful events are the result of hundreds of small details handled well. From timelines to contracts to logistics, staying organized is not optional in this field. Early in my career, I developed systems to keep everything on track, and those systems became the foundation of my business.
Advice:
Create processes early. Use checklists, timelines, and planning tools, and refine them over time. Do not rely on memory—build systems that support consistency and professionalism.
3. Adaptability and Problem-Solving
No event ever goes exactly as planned. Weather changes, vendors run late, timelines shift. The ability to stay calm, think quickly, and solve problems without disrupting the client experience is one of the most valuable skills a planner can develop.
Advice:
Seek out hands-on experience whenever possible. The more situations you encounter, the more confident and capable you will become. Learn to approach challenges with a steady mindset and a solutions-first attitude.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Our ideal client is typically a post-college professional who is established in their career and values both quality and experience. They appreciate tradition, but also want their wedding to feel personal and thoughtfully designed rather than overly trendy.
They are drawn to an elegant, timeless aesthetic – something that will feel just as meaningful and beautiful years from now as it does on their wedding day. While they care about design, what matters most to them is how the day feels: they want a celebration that is warm, welcoming, and centered around their guests.
They tend to lead full, busy lives, which is why they value having an experienced professional to guide them. They are not necessarily looking to hand off control entirely, but they do want a trusted partner who can bring clarity, structure, and peace of mind to the planning process.
Above all, they want to be present. They want to spend their wedding day celebrating with their family and friends, not managing logistics or solving problems behind the scenes. They understand the value of a well-run event and are willing to invest in expertise to ensure their wedding is seamless, meaningful, and truly memorable.
