Hi Heather White, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose as a dog trainer stemmed from a combination of my experiences as a pet sitter, particularly the incident with a reactive dog that I had known for over a year. This unexpected attack prompted me to delve deeper into understanding canine behavior and training techniques, igniting a passion for helping dogs and their owners.
My background as a pet sitter provided me with firsthand experience in handling a variety of dogs, and the attack was definitely my defining moment in becoming a professional dog trainer. It made me understand the importance of proper training and socialization for both dogs and the owners. This incident led me to become one of the greatest dog trainers in the state of Arizona.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born in Pomona, California in 1973 and was raised in a small town called Landers, CA. This is where I found my lifelong passion and love for animals. I grew up on a working farm where we raised what we ate. This is also where I learned to communicate with animals on a level most humans cannot. Despite knowing I had the heart in working with animals, I initially went into the medical field for a 25-year-old career helping the community one person at a time. Burn out led me to reevaluate my path.
I started as a pet sitter, where at one pivotal moment in that job I was viciously attacked by a client’s dog. Determined to better understand canine behavior and the role humans play in that, I found a mentor and worked with him to better understand and eventually established my own dog training business. Coming into my 7th year as a dog trainer, I am one of the many few that specialize in aggressive and reactive dogs.
I am also the only dog professional that has created and teaches employees in various industries on safely encountering dogs during work, from delivery drivers, real estate agents, to home health aides.
I recently created a 2 hour train the owner program that has been extremely successful.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hire a professional dog trainer who has the experience and knowledge to handle all types of dogs and behaviors.
Lifelong learning, keep filling your brain with knowledge and you’ll never grow old.
Give much more than you receive.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Unprofessional dog trainers and feeding off the desperate owners. A professional dog trainer should always give 100% of the information and be a lifetime support for the owners.
