We recently connected with Héctor L. E. Olivencia and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Héctor L. E., we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Developing the confidence and self esteem requires compromise with yourself. The willing to heal is the key for grow and success in every area… for the up course of your entire life. To be where I am right now required a lot of healing and still I’m healing (it is a day by day thing). Confidence was (what I believe it came from) due to my desire of adventures and new experiences. Someone asked for volunteers for a summer camp and I said: yes, why not? This helped me to get to a setting in which I was way out of my confort zone. The adventure continued to another camp setting in which I had to travel further to an unknown place by my self. Confidence comes by taking risks in life. In the case of my self esteem; it is a thing that goes little by little. In my case, I come from a background of bullying and body shaming… For those who lived this know that even when you are healed; it is a vulnerable area and there’s always way of improvement.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Professionally I’m focused on grief; mostly children and adolescents and on helping men to heal and to not go for the social standards of “how men are supposed to be”. My grief focus is due to the experience that I have every single summer since 2022 with the organization Experience Camps; a summer camp program for children and adolescents that experienced the loss of a significant one. Through their stories I had learned to go beyond the books and started to understand the human nature in a different form. Most of the problems with children are due to a significant loss in their life. In the other hand, after reading the book “Men Enough” from Justin Baldoni; my mind changed dramatically and realized that as men we had been thought wrong. At this point I should mention that I had this moment before starting the camp…which is the reason of why this camp means a lot. Being a man and being vulnerable is normal and completely human. At camp I meet the most wonderful, cuddly, kissing, hugging and crying men in the world, all in one place. I come from a setting that this is wrong; but I unlearned this… This is why I focus on helping men heal and grief.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The key of success is love… Learning to love my self in all the areas; loving every hardship moment and turning them as opportunities where the key. In this process the willingness to do things; from healing to succeeding are the mayor components. This goes from the inside to the outside.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents always had a yes to whatever I wanted to do professionally. Even though in a moment I started to take risks by my own; not having a yes or no from them; they were always supportive. My parents, even when they where not sure about something they will support economically to emotionally in the ways they could.
