Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hei Kuok. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Hei, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
For self-care, I love crocheting, journaling, thrifting some unique finds, and checking out local art markets. Doing something creative away from the screen really helps me stay motivated.
I also enjoy taking walks in nature — it’s a great way to reset and reminds me there’s more to life than just my projects. These little breaks help me come back to work feeling refreshed and ready to think outside the box, finding fun, unconventional ways to solve design challenges!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hey, I’m Hei! I’m a Motion Designer from Hong Kong, currently focused on honing my skills through a motion graphics internship while working on personal projects whenever I can. I love mixing things up — whether it’s playful, whimsical designs or sleek, modern graphics, I’m always looking for fresh ways to blend those styles. My approach is all about keeping things fun while staying detail-oriented and professional.
One day, I hope to launch my own studio and push those creative boundaries even further. For now, I’m diving into the world of motion graphics, laying the groundwork for exciting things ahead!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say three qualities that really made a difference for me are curiosity, resilience, and keeping things in perspective. Curiosity is huge — never be afraid to ask questions or reach out to people in the industry. It can feel a little nerve-wracking at first, but trust me, everyone’s been where you are. For every ‘no,’ there’s a ‘yes,’ and things tend to work out in ways you wouldn’t expect.
Resilience is your secret weapon because, let’s be real, things won’t always go perfectly the first time around. And you know what? That’s totally fine! The world is way bigger than your latest project, so don’t sweat it if things don’t go as planned. Mistakes are just part of the fun — they’re definitely not the end of the world!
Perspective is super important too! It’s easy to feel like your whole life is tied to your job, but don’t forget to step back and enjoy the ride. Once you realize that everyone in the industry is just human, things get a lot easier. People are just regular folks who’ve been in your shoes and can be your friends. Don’t be afraid to approach them, because when you see people as just another person, everything feels more approachable, and you’ll find doors open up in ways you didn’t expect.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I’m always down to collaborate! I love working with people who keep things fun while creating something awesome — the kind of folks who can throw out a good dad joke but are also serious about making cool work. I’m all about friendly, easygoing partnerships where we can push creative ideas and still have a good time.
If you’re into mixing fun with great design, I’d love to hear from you! Whether your style leans more playful or sleek and modern, let’s team up and make something cool (and probably laugh a lot in the process). Feel free to hit me up if you’re interested through my socials!
