We recently connected with Helen Susan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Helen with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I hate the feeling of being unstable or not assured. My work ethic is driven by these feelings. I try to do everything in my power to not ever have those feelings in my work or life. I also like nice things haha. And it was instilled in me at a young age that if you wanted nice things you have to work for it. Jokes on me because I always thought my parents were just being annoying and wanted me to do yard work. Now later in life to have a good reputable business, to go on a nice vacation, or even enjoy the little things like concerts with friends; it all comes down to my work ethic. So all these drive me to have an amazing work ethic that reflects in every aspect of life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
“When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good.” A quote we’ve all probably heard at one time or another. This quote didn’t mean much to me back then, but now it speaks volumes to me in everything I do. I think I started my cosmetology journey at 5 when I would cut my Barbie’s hair. But I got into cosmetology school officially at a very young age (17). I had no idea that it would snowball into such a perfect little empire for me. My professional license says “Cosmetology” which is a great blanket that covers everything. However, I have honed into the barbering and esthetics part of my license. I specialize in haircuts, eyebrows, eyelashes, and semi-permanent makeup. Focusing on these services has let my OCD (self-diagnosed) thrive. I feel like I’ve always been a perfectionist but with limited services, I can continue education and keep up on these trends a lot more efficiently. I enjoy all these services but my ultimate favorite would have to be semi-permanent cosmetics. The transformation that microblading provides that my beautiful clients go through during this process is truly remarkable. The confidence that exudes after an appointment is something that I’m very grateful to be a part of. The trust that all my clients have in me to provide a service that helps them with their self-confidence on a daily basis is not something I take lightly. I am forever grateful.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Self-discipline, communication, patience, & willingness to learn. I know you asked for 3, but I threw in an extra one for extra flavor. I think we all struggle with all of these areas in our lives. But becoming an entrepreneur has humbled me in so many aspects of life. These qualities have grown immensely and without them I don’t know where me or my business would stand. I would recommend that anyone who is starting in any career have some self-discipline. To strive for your goals and commit to them. To know how to communicate clearly and efficiently with everyone is an amazing skill. Everyone will remember your professionalism and how you carry yourself. Always have an open mind to continue learning. Whether it’s through educational classes or just learning how to deal with different personalities and situations in life. The process of it all is never easy or pretty. So having some patience with yourself and others will always save you from some headaches. It’s going to be hard but, I promise it will be all worth it in the end.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Anybody who wants/needs a self-confidence boost. I strive to make every client I come in contact with leave feeling better, ready to show the world who they are. I am aware we live in a superficial society where our looks matter way more than they should. We are all constantly battling with ourselves and society with this. I know that I am no supermodel but the little things I can do for myself mentally and physically help immensely take on this battle. So I am grateful for any opportunity to help out another human with their confidence.
