Meet Helene Galek

We were lucky to catch up with Helene Galek recently and have shared our conversation below.

Helene, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

It is a mixture of a great support system, doing a lot of mindset work and simply growing older and becoming the person I was meant to be. (thank you, David Bowie!)

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

What I love about doing all the things I do is that each day is a new possibility and there is always something new to learn. I am also experiencing a new boldness when venturing into new areas, even though there is always that little scared voice underneath questioning if I can really accomplish all that. However, I do know that our brain is wired that way and I have learned to acknowledge it and say, “thanks for sharing”. I began concentrating on writing these past few years and produced my first play this winter and it was a success! I also have gotten pieces independently published as well. I am now returning to write my first book, which I have put off because I worried that people wouldn’t like it or give it a bad review. But now, I have gotten to the point in my life where I brush off those concerns because I am aware it is more important for me to feel satisfied and accomplished. And I have already declared to my artist friends that next year, I will produce and star in my first film that I wrote. And yes, it has its fear factor but I am determined to do it and I have faith in myself. I also focus on the joy of the journey of these projects and that is a great motivator as well. And as the famous quote says, “If not now, when?”

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe in having a village; whether that is a class or workshop or accountability partner. No one accomplishes anything alone and the support and sharing of ideas and knowledge is so important. Curiosity and being open to learning something new are other vital components. And of course, observing the work of others in my fields inspires me as well and gives me the satisfaction of supporting others.
Forming and establishing relationships and focusing on your passion and “the why” (your purpose) is the foundation for whatever field you are in and whatever you are pursuing.
Being of service and recognizing your own special talent without comparing yourself to others are two more ingredients to include in your journey.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

It is easy to fall into the state of overwhelm when multiple projects may be going on simultaneously. In the past, I could get so caught up in this feeling, it was actually become paralyzing and difficult to take that first step. First, I take a deep breath and acknowledge that it will be all done and done correctly and these are things I want to do. Then I make a calendar as well as a daily to-do list so I know I will need to schedule certain things each day. I concentrate on what needs to be done immediately and what can be assigned to a later date. I also make sure I am getting enough sleep and exercise along with healthy eating to be at my most optimum shape. I work on focusing on the actual day so I don’t go down a rabbit hole at the enormity of it all. Learning how to budget my time has always been a challenge to me and I do work at that. Crossing off items on my to-do list is what makes me feel accomplished and satisfied.
