We recently connected with Hether and Haley and have shared our conversation below.
Hether and Haley, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Haley: Watching someone close to me struggle after her son’s murder. He was killed in 2016 and his case is still unsolved. She’d call me needing help with ideas on reward fundraisers and getting media exposure.
Hether: Kansas City has around 700 unsolved murders and over 300 missing person cases with the majority of these cases having little to no media coverage.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hether: Our podcast, Who Dunnit Sisters, primarily focuses on Kansas City area unsolved homicides and missing person cases. Our goal is to help bring awareness to these victims and their cases.
Haley: We try to interview a family member or close friend of the victim so we can learn more about them. The media typically only talks about the murder event and not who the murdered victim was. These people were more than murder victims. They were a mom, dad, sister, brother with likes and dislikes, goals, and dreams.
What has had the most impact on what you do?
Haley: Watching family members explain the most difficult days of their lives. Seeing the pain they go through every day. I can walk away from a story, but these families cannot. This is their life.
Hether: Their commitment to fight for the justice of their loved one is inspiring. These family members are some of the strongest, most passionate, and most dedicated people we’ve ever met. They are our motivation.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Haley: Families coming forward to speak with us. Many times, they change their minds. Whether it’s because they fear the person who murdered their loved one, or re-living the day it happened, or making the police mad and then not prioritizing their loved one’s case.
Hether: If we can flip the script of the negative aspects of “snitching” and turn it into “doing the right thing”, we can all solve some of these cases. We need to put fear into the people who are committing these crimes instead of the people who are witnessing them.
