Meet Hilary Bateman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hilary Bateman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Hilary, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want  to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout  our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or  qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d  love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

The feeling of jumping into the unknown has become more comfortable the  more I constantly practice it. However, there are always a few hurdles I need to  address before taking on a risk. Discussing these thoughts with other  entrepreneurs has helped me remove the fear. In many cases, the fear of failure  has stopped me and many others from chasing their dreams or making a  change. In order to move beyond this, I set small goals for myself so that I am  not overwhelmed by the entire situation. Having a clear mindset, plan for  success; focus on the thrilling adventure ahead of you definitely helps offer  yourself the opportunity to learn and grow. Once you take yourself out of your  comfort zone, that’s where the magic happens.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about  yourself?

Born and raised in San Diego, I am an entrepreneur with a passion for  flowers and the well-being of my local San Diego community. In September  2018, I launched Little House of Flowers; refurbishing a little shop on the corner  of Friars Rd. & Via Las Cumbres by USD. With strong ties to OB and Point  Loma, I decided it was time to bring the beauty of flowers to my hometown. Beyond the beauty of flowers, I take pride in giving back to the community by  donating to local schools & charities, sponsoring the Point Loma Summer  Concert Series, and supporting the San Diego Humane Society with my deep  love for animals.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which  three would you say matter most?

With my experience thus far, the qualities of knowledge that have been the  most impactful in my journey are flexibility, communication, and passion. Adjusting how we do business has been a significant factor in learning how to  shift gears while keeping my business running smoothly. It is so important to  truly understand that change is inevitable and should be anticipated. With the  help of my strong flower team, we embrace it and tackle any challenges  together.

Our business as a whole is excited to continue expanding our craft and  creativity by providing the beauty of flowers to our community. We are always  actively working on community event projects, such as our floral workshops,

opening our space to the community for private events as well as expanding our  monthly floral subscription program and donating to our community. I am constantly looking toward the future and the work that is being  accomplished by the flower team and hope that our passion for flowers extends  to the rest of the community.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been  your biggest area of improvement or growth?

The biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months has been  many aspects from the business side, personal, and floral.

Building a strong team that works well together has allowed me, as an owner, to  step away, relinquish control, and delegate, so my team can use their skills and  talents. Unleashing our creativity and thinking outside the box has helped with  all aspects of the business, from floral design to marketing. It’s also given me  the opportunity to take some personal time off to reboot and refresh, so I don’t  burn out.

From the floral side, being able to learning firsthand from the growers at the  Flower Market in Carlsbad about the quality and the origin of all the different  varietals is not only overwhelming but surprising. Who knew there were 70  species of sunflowers?
