We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Holli Jacobsen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Holli with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My parents instilled an excellent work ethic in me, for which I am very grateful. Hard work has been a catalyst for me, helping me find success in many aspects of my life, including interior design. They also taught me to do high quality work; I was expected to do things right the first time. That work ethic and expectation of quality have proven to be a formula for success again and again.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner and principal designer of Holli Jacobsen Interior Design (HJID). I help clients with a wide range of projects including remodels, new builds, furniture procurement, space planning, design consultations, etc. No job is ever the same-which keeps it interesting, yet challenging at the same time!
I recently launched my website which I am very proud of. You can find the link at the end of the interview…go check it out! Fill out the inquiry form if you’re interested in working together!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) EDUCATION. First and foremost, my education. I would not have the knowledge needed nor the opportunities I’ve had if it weren’t for my 4-year degree in Interior Design from WSU, a CIDA accredited university with a prestigious interior design program.
2) TENACITY. I can’t even count how many sleepless nights, tear filled days, and discouraging moments I had as a student and in my career as an interior designer. My design program was rigorous and intensive. It pushed me beyond what I felt capable of. My design business is likewise challenging me and stretching me as a person and as a designer. Some days I simply want to give up. But a little voice inside my head encourages me to “just keep swimming” (as Dory from Finding Nemo would say). So that’s what I do! 🙂
3) COURAGE. I had to dig deep to find the courage to start my own design business. I was scared to venture into the unknown but decided to take the leap in spite of my fear. I’ve heard that “risk is the down payment for success” so I decided to bet on myself and take that risk!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I find it helpful to sit down and get organized! I make a detailed list of what I need to do and when I plan to do it based on priority and time available. I find that taking a little extra time up front to get organized increases my focus and productivity immensely. Once I feel organized, I’m able to put my head down and get to work!
