Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Holly Curby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Holly, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
That’s a deep question. My knee-jerk response would be from my faith. I fully believe God’s word when in Jeremiah 29:11 we are told, “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I also live by Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart lean not to your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all you do and He will direct your path.” So, whatever comes my way, I know God is with me, I trust in His plan, and I try to have a growth mindset that I can learn from it. At the end of the day, God is good, and He’s got me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
This path all started years ago with my mom. She had urged me to write a book based on comments she was receiving from women regarding my Facebook posts being encouraging, inspiring, and motivating. The day she died I promised her I’d write the book. Along that path, something I wrote ended up being picked up by Lifeway’s Journey Women’s Devotional and I suddenly found myself being asked to write for their quarterly devotional magazine. In the midst of trying to get my book published, a publisher recommended that I start a podcast in preparation for the book, so after researching and launching Holly’s Highlights podcast it took off and before long it was picked up as a monthly column in the City Journal newspaper distributed throughout the state of Utah. While getting the book published word about my posts seemed to be topics of conversation and resulted in me being asked to speak at many different events – city cabinet meetings, schools, business retreats and trainings, at chamber of commerces, churches, and women’s retreats. Then that day came when I received the email notifying me that Koehler Books wanted to publish my book and on April 28, 2023, Face-Lift was released which was covered on local ABC, CBS, and FOX affiliates as well as in various publications.
As result many have reached out to work with me one-on-one, so having my Master’s in Management and Leadership as well as getting certified as a Life Coach I am able to offer Leadership and Personal Coaching. My overall brand has morphed into the foundational message of where it all began on my Facebook posts, and that is to simply encourage, inspire, and equip readers, listeners, attendees, and those I coach to intentionally live their lives full of purpose.
I have recently been presented with an opportunity should my book sales continue as they are, but we’ll cross that bridge if and when we get there. Right now I am simply trying to ensure I stay in the center of God’s will today so that I can be in the center of His will tomorrow. Wherever He leads…I’ll go.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that it is imperative to show up every day with a growth mindset. That mindset has the capability to learn from everyone around us – young, old, experienced, inexperienced as well as from every situation – both good and bad. Along with that mindset is the perspective of surrounding yourself with good people – you don’t want to be the smartest person in the room, surround yourself with those whom you can learn from and perhaps have strengths where you do not.
A second skill set would be grit and perseverance. You will have setbacks, stumbling blocks, and of course, those nay-sayers who are either intimidated by you or don’t know what to do with you. Blowing out others’ candles won’t make yours shine any brighter – so go ahead and cheer them on in their endeavors and help their light shine. There is room for everyone at the table, so be the first to pull up another chair and welcome others in. Take your moments to cry when needed, but don’t wallow in it, get back up, brush yourself off, and always let that wise person show up – not the foolish.
Above all, have a compass to live by. For me, mine is my faith. It keeps me on track, headed in the right direction, and even encouraged along the journey. Ensure you have boundaries, standards, values, and priorities – and you stick to them. Your character can’t be bought. Don’t live a life of comparison, but live the life you have been given. Choose joy in YOUR journey.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Whenever we are asked to speak, conduct training, do a book signing, or event interview – those outlets aren’t necessarily going to need us again. So, being able to collaborate or partner with other speakers, trainers, authors, podcast hosts – well, we can always leave each other’s contact information as a referral for that entity’s next need.
I’d welcome other authors in my genre to connect so we can refer each other to those we speak to and provide book signings for. I’d love to connect with other business trainers and retreat speakers so that we can let those companies know of one another as a reference for their next speaking gig. Podcast hosts who help others in how to, leadership, Christian, or even business topics – let’s interview each other on each other’s shows, even refer each other to the shows we interview ourselves.
Again, it’s not a competition nor a comparison, there is plenty of room at the table, so let’s help each other out as well as help those who we are serving with our services by leading them to their next “you.” A simple way to highlight each other. A total win-win-win.
