We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Holly Schultz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Holly, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Many of us look at others who exude confidence and assume they’ve always been that way, but confidence is often built, not born. When I was younger, I struggled with being incredibly self-conscious. I was so worried about saying the wrong thing or not being liked that I avoided speaking up altogether. It was a part of myself I knew I wanted to change because it held me back from truly living and connecting with others.
To break free from that small, limiting box I had placed myself in, I decided to take action. I immersed myself in self-help books and podcasts, learning strategies to improve both my mental and physical well-being. These resources gave me tools to understand myself better, challenge my fears, and step into the confident person I wanted to become.
It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but every step I took empowered me to grow. By focusing on personal development, I realized that confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t—it’s something you build by investing in yourself. And if I could do it, so can you. It starts with one decision: to believe you deserve more than the limitations you’ve set for yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are discipline, determination, and patience. I often hear people say, “I wish I were more disciplined.” But that statement always leads me to ask, what’s holding you back? The answer is simple: it’s YOU.
You’re holding yourself back by giving in to excuses and convincing yourself why you “can’t” or “aren’t” disciplined. Discipline isn’t something you’re born with; it’s a skill you build. Think of it like doing the dishes or cleaning the house—most days, it’s the last thing you feel like doing, but you do it anyway because you know it’s necessary.
The same applies to your health and goals. Discipline is about showing up and doing the work, even when it’s not convenient or exciting. It’s a choice you make every day to prioritize what truly matters. So, ask yourself: are you ready to stop standing in your own way? The power to change is in your hands!
You also have to be determined, because without it, excuses will creep in, and before you know it, you’re stuck in the cycle of “starting over on Monday” every week. When motivation wanes, I’ve found it helpful to reflect on why I started in the first place and remind myself of the reasons I wanted change. Remembering what didn’t make me happy about where I was helps push me through the tough moments and stay focused on my goals.
Patience is equally important because real, lasting results don’t happen overnight—despite what the media might promise. Sure, you can lose 20 pounds in two weeks, but it’s neither healthy nor sustainable, and it can damage your metabolism in the long run. True progress takes time, and it’s about building habits that support a lifetime of health.
Life will throw obstacles your way—that’s inevitable. But patience means recognizing that it’s okay to have setbacks, to feel down for a moment. What matters is letting life happen, dusting yourself off, and continuing forward. Progress isn’t linear, but it’s always worth it. Stay committed, and trust the process..
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins is the one book that comes to mind when I needed help transforming my thoughts and habits. Its an inspiring memoir and self-improvement guide that challenges readers to overcome their mental and physical limits. Goggins shares his journey from a troubled childhood and obesity to becoming a Navy SEAL and one of the world’s top endurance athletes. Through raw storytelling and actionable lessons, he emphasizes the power of mental toughness, accountability, and pushing past comfort zones to achieve greatness.
This book played a pivotal role in transforming my mindset. Goggins’ concept of the “40% Rule”—the idea that when you think you’re done, you’ve only tapped into 40% of your potential—completely shifted how I approach challenges. It taught me the importance of self-discipline, persistence, and owning my excuses. His relentless pursuit of personal growth inspired me to stop holding myself back and start taking full accountability for my actions and mindset.
“Can’t Hurt Me” encouraged me to embrace discomfort, face obstacles head-on, and consistently push myself to be better. It reminded me that the path to success is paved with grit and determination—and that the only limits are the ones we place on ourselves.
