Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Huyen Quach. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Huyen, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I am a full-time CPA that specializes in corporate tax compliance for the oil & gas industry. Being in a role that requires me to spend hours staring at numbers on a spreadsheet is the biggest motivator to have a creative outlet. I have always had an interest in photography but the challenge of learning how to use a camera was intimidating. A few years ago, I finally invested time to train myself on photography through lots of YouTube videos and practice. I was able to grow my small hobby into my food blog that I have today which is my space to showcase my photography and videography.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Houston based food blogger and photographer. I run @onehungryasiangirl on Instagram and Tiktok which focuses on restaurant and activity recommendations around Houston. I started the page about 4 years ago when I first moved to Houston. Coming from a smaller city, I was overwhelmed with all the incredible food options and spent all my free time exploring restaurants around the city. I want to provide a resource for other newcomers, visitors, or Houston locals that are also looking to experience something new. I’m very passionate about highlighting small local businesses that may not always get the spotlight they deserve. My page is essentially a combination of my love for food and photography. I want to create a visually appealing experience using my photography/videography skills but also provide useful information to the audience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Time management, diligence, and relationship building. Managing my time to shoot, edit, and post for my page on my a consistent basis while balancing a full-time job is challenging, but the positive side is I’ve learned to utilize my time more efficiently. Having diligence to continue creating valuable content and improving my craft has also been key. Lastly, maintaining good relationships has been crucial. Many of my collaboration current opportunities have come from relationships that I built in the past. My advice for anyone who wants to create their own food page is to just start. Your first post may not be great but the first of anything never is. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll be able to improve.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Teaching me that nothing comes without hard work. My parents are immigrants from Vietnam and I saw firsthand how hard they worked to be able to provide for the family. It instilled in me the ability to push through hardships to be able to get to where I want to be without taking shortcuts.
