Meet Ian Hietala

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ian Hietala. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Ian, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose through my own journey and struggle. As an unathletic white kid in a sport filled with predominately African American, and athletic players, I was always overlooked because of my appearance and skillset. As a got older, I trained on my own and was able to make myself athletic and skilled enough to compete pro basketball players, something I didn’t think was possible. Now I’m determined to help un-athletic, underlooked players, reach their genetic potential, and become as skilled as possible in basketball!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a “hybrid” basketball trainer, which means I combine performance & sports science, with skills training! What’s most exciting about my profession is the he ability to put in countless hours and dedication to my craft, and not only help other players who train with me, but also reap 100% of the benefits of my work!

In December, I will be releasing an online training / mentorship community, in hopes to impact and bring value to players all around the world!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The first quality that impacted me the most was obsessiveness. I obsesses about skills training, how to make players better, & more athletic. I spent hours researching drills and concepts to do just that. As well as being obsessive about effective communication for clientele relationships, human psychology for creating viral social media content, & business knowledge for creating and sustaining my own company

The second quality is self-reflection, having the ability to reflect on my training sessions, the way I talk, my content, and how I can improve or sustain what I’m currently doing

The third quality is “being unphased”. What I mean by this is simply continuing your routine and following through with your vision, regardless of whatever crosses paths and affects my business negatively

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Taking initiative towards certain tasks that can help to white my milestones. Limiting beliefs still hold me back at times, but mentally redeeming and reflecting on why I’m feeling a particular way, helps to combat this
