We recently connected with Ian Taylor Schlitz and have shared our conversation below.
Ian, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I maintain my creative drive through a structured approach that revolves around three key elements. Firstly, my dedicated following plays a significant role in keeping me inspired. I have amassed nearly 7,000 subscribers on my YouTube channel, many of whom express their support through fan-generated art, uplifting comments, and expressions of gratitude for the positive impact my content has had on their creative journeys.
Secondly, my ability to monetize my creative endeavors contributes to my sustained motivation. Renowned Minecraft content creators have approached me, expressing interest in collaborative projects and offering financial compensation for my contributions. Additionally, my Patreon supporters generously subscribe at the $10 per month tier, demonstrating their commitment to my work.
Lastly, I draw inspiration from observing the work of other talented creators within my niche and beyond. I frequently engage with the Minecraft animation community, particularly on platforms such as YouTube and the official Mine-Imator Discord server, where creators share their innovative projects. Beyond my specific field, I also find inspiration in diverse forms of media, including anime, films, and unrelated content, which I seamlessly integrate into my creative workflow.
In essence, these three fundamental factors serve as the pillars of my motivation and continually fuel my creative spirit.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently in my first year of pursuing a doctoral degree in Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas (UNT) while concurrently operating as an independent freelance 3D animator and studio director. Within the realm of 3D animation, I own a YouTube channel titled “BeinBian,” which serves as a platform to showcase my creative animation endeavors. My channel currently has a dedicated following of nearly 7,000 subscribers. I have been privileged to collaborate with prominent content creators such as MooseCraft, Wudo, Meezoid, and others of considerable stature.
The allure of 3D animation, which I find particularly captivating, lies in its capacity to breathe life into characters and narratives. Through this medium, I have the unique opportunity to manifest and communicate visual concepts, whether they originate from my own creative impulses or are articulated by discerning clients. The gratification derived from witnessing the audience’s reactions to my work is a constant source of fulfillment. I specialize primarily in action animation, encompassing dynamic choreographed sequences involving combat, special effects, and dance performances. However, I can animate just about anything within the realm of Minecraft.
Notably, my studio has recently broadened its offerings to include custom Minecraft animations tailored to the specific requirements of our clients. Whether you seek to surprise your child with a Minecraft character serenading them on their birthday or wish to commemorate a memorable moment with a personalized Minecraft wallpaper featuring your child and their friend, BeinBian Studio is equipped to fulfill these creative aspirations. Orders and inquiries can be directed to us via email at [email protected].
In essence, I am deeply committed to both my scholarly pursuits and my creative endeavors in the field of 3D animation, and I welcome opportunities to engage with clients seeking imaginative and bespoke animation solutions through BeinBian Studio.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Throughout my journey, I have identified three pivotal attributes, competencies, or areas of expertise that have profoundly shaped my trajectory: the significance of my peer network, unwavering dedication to honing my craft, and a receptive stance toward constructive critique.
Firstly, the composition of one’s professional network plays an integral role in influencing productivity and fostering growth. As a 3D animator, I recognized the paramount importance of surrounding myself with individuals who shared my passion and maintained a constructive perspective on the journey of skill refinement. Regrettably, there were instances in which associations with individuals who lacked thoughtfulness proved detrimental to my developmental progress, resulting in us cutting contact.
Secondly, the unwavering commitment to mastering one’s craft cannot be overstated. Irrespective of one’s chosen field, the fundamental principle of trusting in the iterative process of skill advancement, embodied by the adage “practice makes perfect,” holds true. Ensure you are consistent with practicing and learning as much as possible.
Lastly, while the value of constructive criticism may be more pronounced in certain domains than others, it remains an invaluable tool for personal and professional development. Although it may not always be easy to digest, it is essential to remember that the ultimate objective is self-improvement. Embracing constructive feedback, even when it challenges one’s preconceptions, is an indispensable means.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents transitioned me from a public school setting to a homeschool environment. This shift to homeschooling allowed me the flexibility to progress at a pace tailored to my individual capabilities, which significantly outpaced the curriculum offered in public schools. At present, I am 17 years of age and am in my first year of a Doctorate program in Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas.
