We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ianthe Mauro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ianthe , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Ask yourself this question:
“What do I do, that I will I never apologize for?” The answer will lead you to your core values. Once you have clarity on what you’re passionate about, what is part of you, at your core, you will be able to articulate your purpose. Sometimes it starts with what you are never willing to compromise. Identifying what you will never do, say or be, is a path to discovering what you truly believe in.
Since this is supposed to be about me, and I just posed a question to you, I will answer in the hopes it encourages you to try this method of finding your purpose. Purpose is what leads us to taking positive actions towards a goal. Having a purpose is a means to being of service, and being of service is the gateway to joy. It’s all connected, and we are all connected.
I will never apologize for doing things differently.
I don’t like to follow steps, A, B, C, etc. I naturally go from A to R to F back to B. It’s the result of being highly creative. I used to think something was wrong with me, that I was lazy for not following all the steps, or prepare in the way it seemed everyone else did. Every time I attempted to follow the conventional steps it felt like I was being punished. I lost my motivation, and pushed and pulled which made it impossible to be inspired. Nothing worked well. Deadlines were missed, relationships ignored and opportunities lost. I remember realizing that when I gave myself permission to do it differently, I was productive, abundant and a magnet for people and opportunities that served a higher purpose. It felt like flow, or grace. So, asking myself, what would I never apologize for, and then acting from that place of allowing myself to be creative, spontaneous and trust my intuitive guidance over the expectations and methods imposed by systems I didn’t feel inspired by, was the beginning of a life of freedom and abundance.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Known as a fairy godmother of mentoring, I illuminate your super powers and often say:
“This is your ruby slipper moment.”
With a background in theatre, film, design, merchandising, creative writing and product development, I create eco-luxury signature scents for brands and entrepreneurs, and turn them into products that will inspire their clients and customers and make them memorable and iconic!
“It’s not just about looking good, it’s about sharing light.”
In 2009, I created Objects with Purpose, an eco luxury candle brand featured in the Oscar Swag bag, on The Today Show, and in over 200 stores across the country. My candles have appeared in HGTV Frontdoor, USA Today, and New York Times Magazine.
I bring creative solutions and energetic grounding to seasoned entrepreneurs as a “creative muse”.
Friendship is an antidote to the epidemic of loneliness, so I have a podcast with my friend Kim Staples called “Unapologetic Uplift”. We have meaningful, in depth conversations with each other and guests, and model what it looks like to be a supportive friend.
Most importantly, I’m a mom of 2, bonus mom of 2 more and recent grandmother.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that create the highest and best impact, in my opinion, are: listening, intuition and flexibility.
To improve your ability to listen it’s important to quiet your mind. Sometimes that’s as easy as taking a walk being present to your body rather than racing thoughts. It starts with the intention of listening.. saying to yourself “I’m going to be open to hearing what this person is saying.” it sounds simple, but the greatest lessons usually are..
To improve your intuition, also requires listening, but this time it’s listening to your inner voice and feelings. And noticing when you act from a place of something you’ve heard inside, how often that “intuitive take” is correct or helpful, and when it isn’t. As your intuition improves, you’ll notice a higher percentage of helpful ideas come to you.
To improve flexibility, you have to be willing to do it wrong. Flexibility comes from the practice of trying multiple ways to get the best result. Listening and intuition are a big part of flexibility also because they will help free you from the trap of rigidity and open up more possibilities to test things and try different ways of being and doing, all while noticing how it feels in your body to be flexible, rather than stuck.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The feeling of overwhelm is familiar to anyone starting their entrepreneurial journey, and guess what? It can continue throughout your career, even when you’ve been an entrepreneur for decades. Overwhelm is a sign that you’re taking on more than you can manage. I used to feel overwhelmed daily, because I didn’t know how to work on my business, I just worked in it. I was putting out fires, waiting for issues to solve and not leading from a place of stability, structure and calm. And then I found a mentor. The greatest strategy to overcome overwhelm is to surround yourself with qualified support. Find a mentor, guide, teacher, mastermind or membership group to lean on and check in with regularly. Get clear on what you are capable of doing, and what you are not, and delegate the parts that rob you of your energy.
