Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Iasia Hawkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
IASIA, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I’ve overcome my creativity by simply diving in. At the start of my hairstyling journey, I tended to stick with simpler styles because they felt more manageable. Whenever a client would send me a photo of a complex design, I would quickly turn it down, convinced I wasn’t capable. Until one day, a long-time client insisted that I try a style that made me uneasy. I finally agreed, and to my surprise, it turned out to closely resemble the inspiration picture. Sometimes, it takes a little push from others to break free from the self-doubt we carry. Now, I truly enjoy exploring my creative side. Hair is my canvas, and it’s my way of expressing creativity to the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Heyl! I’m Iasia, a hairstylist based in Brooklyn, NY. My passion lies in natural hair care, focusing on styles like twists and braids. My journey into haircare began in my childhood when I had to learn to style my own hair since no one else could. As I’ve grown, my love for haircare has deepened, especially because I enjoy helping others feel confident and informed about their hair. Looking ahead, I aspire to create my own line of natural haircare products and engage in volunteer work, as I’ve always been motivated to assist those in need.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most influential skills I found were ambition, the ability to accept criticism, and maintaining a student mindset. My top piece of advice is to embrace discomfort. Growth doesn’t happen when you stay in your comfort zone. Trying new things is always beneficial. Be open to learning from others, as no one has all the answers. Seeking a mentor or enrolling in classes related to your interests can be incredibly helpful—that’s where the student mentality really shines.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m eager to team up with others who share similar interests! I’m looking to connect with individuals involved in volunteer work, those who have a haircare line, or anyone in my field. I’m particularly interested in collaborating with schools, especially those offering hair courses like high schools or cosmetology programs. There’s a significant gap in knowledge about curly hair, something I noticed during my time in cosmetology school.
