Meet Ida Y. Robles

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ida Y. Robles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ida, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Well this can be a very long story so I’ll keep it brief. In my early 30’s I went through an unfortunate circumstance that put me in a situation where I was forced to be alone with myself. I learned a lot about myself, my boundaries, my limitations, my expectations and what I personally feel is right for me no matter how it may look from the outside in. In that time I found art, I began with drawing and years down the road I began painting on canvases. I knew then that one of my purposes in life is to adorn our world with Art, especially any and all art related to my people, Borikuas, Tainos, Puerto Rico, etc. I don’t limit myself though, I love all things art.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Visual Artist. I love capturing my vision on a canvas and bringing it to life. I do a lot of Art related to the Tainos, Boricuas, Puerto Ricans and the island but I do expand outside of that. I do portrait paintings whether commissioned or just for creating. I have done memorial paintings for those who have lost loved ones. I try my best not to limit myself and allow myself to be open to try new things. I will step out of my comfort zone every now and again, it’s kind of difficult for an introvert like myself, but I will do it.

I also offer prints of all of my original paintings as well as T-shirts, etc., which can be purchased directly through me or my website.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities that folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 most important qualities, skills and/or areas of knowledge.

Qualities: Being FOCUSED, being OPEN TO CRITICISM and allowing yourself to TRY NEW THINGS.

Skills and/or knowledge: In art the skill is different for everyone. I am a self-taught artist so my skills have had to come from me asking other artists for advice and suggestions as well as watching videos. The best skill anyone can bring to the table is the DESIRE to learn, COMMITMENT to the process, PERFECT your skill and DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY,

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I have to remove myself from the situation, whether it’s physically or emotionally, so that I can regroup and process things. I tend to be very hard on myself, I am my worst critic. Social Media contributes to me being overwhelmed. When I don’t see the amount of likes or shares or comments as I think I should have I start to doubt myself and come down myself. I find myself wanting to give it all up (art). That’s when I have to stop and remove myself from the situation. Social media doesn’t dictate my success, doesn’t dictate the direction of my art journey. I have to remind myself of that very often. It’s still a process for me but I know that I will overcome it.

My best advice is to know your worth, know your limits and allow yourself the space and time you need to keep yourself elevated emotionally and physically. Take the time that you need to decompress and regroup. Be the best of who you are, trust me, that is more than enough.
