Meet Imani Archer

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Imani Archer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Imani below.

Hi Imani, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
To be honest, not forcing it. Obviously there’s thing that I’ll do to inspire myself like watching movies, drawing, looking at art, but if it doesn’t come, then I know that that moment isn’t probably the right time to write a song!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I was born in Los Angeles but I moved around the east coast until I was about 13 years old. The place I lived in the longest was Kissimmee, Florida! Moving to LA was such a culture shock at that age, but I knew I was in the right place for my music career to blossom.

I really got into making my my own music around 16 and it’s been a very long journey since then. From developing my sound, finding my voice, and learning how to write songs, it’s been a learning curve.

I feel like now I’m in a place where I’m confident in my artistry and am so excited to share it with more of the world! It’s been so lovely seeing and hearing everyone’s reactions to the last two songs I put out (Crocodile Tears, How Can I Lose You Without Losing Me?)! Nothing makes me happier than turning a shitty situation into a great song and having people relate to that!

I actually have a new song coming in November and it’s one of my favorites I’ve ever written. It’s super raw and vulnerable, and I can’t wait for people to see more of that side of me!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hmmmm. Probably learning how to play an instrument really young, practicing my singing skills every single day, and studying the greats!

I don’t think I’d be where I am as an artist if i didn’t invest my time doing those three things!

My advice for anyone just starting out is just find what you like! I know that sounds so simple but there’s gonna be so many people trying to tell you what to listen to or what kind of music to make so it’s really important to carve out your own lane and master it!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I take the day for myself! As someone who struggles with anxiety, I take my mental health very seriously.

Sometimes that looks like watching my favorite TV show, reading a self help book, eating my favorite junk food, or talking to one of my close friends.

Just do whatever makes you feel good, and don’t feel guilty about it. Sometimes I have the tendency to not wanna do these things when I need it cause I’m not being “productive”. But at the end of the day, you have to remember you’re human, and sometimes it’s ok to do nothing all day or do things your inner child wants.
